The gear box itself only weighs in only a lil bit more than a stock 540 motor. My whole tranny that I am building will weigh in at about the same as a Maxx tranny. The first pic shows a 43 mm motor gearbox and the second i do beleive is the 36mm gearbox.

Nope I dint........I did that a long time ago for another project As for these gear boxes the cost about $250.00 for 3 of them plus shipping. One is a 32mm in 48:1 gearing #2 is a 36mm at 64:1 gearing and the third is 43mm at 64:1. They should be arriving soon they are one of the last things I need to finish my project.

The wife of mr-e-maxx will be on these forums sometime soon to officially inform all of us. I just want her to know my thoughs and feelings on her recent hardship.

I just got done posting on other forums about this topic. All of us here are very sad to hear this. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers so that you may get through this. I just hope that your husband went peacefully, and that you are able to overcome this issue. May he rest in peace.....

I just recieved my gearmotors today. Now the real fun gets to begin. It should be about another 2 weeks to make the tranny. I will post pics of the gears that I recived soon. They are a 3 stage reduction with each reduction being 4:1 so the gives me a final reduction at the tranny of 64:1.

mechanicalbob,

Those planetary sets look awesome! Let us know when you can post a few pictures of the tranny.

I have been lurking for a while, but I'd like to share some ideas for nitro crawlers:

Rolling in neutral:

To solve the rolling backwards or forwards in neutral problem, you could mechanically mix in some brake at neutral, with a high idle. This is great as long as the brakes aren't grippy, because then it would be like an auto tranny. At neutral the car is slow but moves just a bit forward, stepping on the gas eliminates any braking, and stepping on the brakes further reduces the idle to full brakes.

In short, the throttle range and braking range overlap slightly from the throttle's idle to just enough to catch onto the clutch. That little grey area.

Now for different speeds:

Planetary gearsets are great... they are strong, simple, and have many ratios in a small package. If you put two planetary gearsets in a row, you could have a 4-speed with reverse, like some autos. You would need a small computer (robot BASIC STAMP controller?) to control the brakes on some of the gears. Maybe have a third channel with a 3 pos switch, pos 1 for reverse, pos 2 for rock crawling (like the "2" setting on autos) and pos 3 for ability to use all 4 gears. This would go real well with a powerful 4-stroke and the brake/clutch overlapping as described above.

With all this, you'd have to be ready for it to cost a lot... say, $150 engine/clutch, 2 planetary gearsets maybe $50, brakes another $25, and the micro controller for the auto tranny probably another $50. So you'd be approaching $300 just for the drivetrain.

On the bright side, you transmission would be so long that if you positioned the output of it in the center chassis, the engine could be above the front axle like in real trucks..

Just some ideas. If I had the money and most importantly, the TIME, I would go for it.

You could always hook up a Savage transmission with 3-speed, but it won't offer the SUPER WIDE scope of ratios as a 4-speed dual planetary geared e-controlled auto.

Edit: Actually, I thought it over with the 4-speed and planetary gears, and it would be kinda hard to pull off that much, since it's hard to do the clutches like they do in real cars.

Hi
Is anyone running the x-factor 2? I just got one that needs restoring some and i need some help with it. First off it did not come with the stock engine so i have installed my hpi s-25 to start out with. But the stock exhaust s type manifold will not fit onto the s-25 engine and also the stock pipe has some damage to it so i am trying to locate a new exhaust system nothing fancy just one that will work/fit. Also how does the throttle servo sit on the posts and what does the linkage set-up look like? I have downloaded user manual for it but its no good for working on this thing so if some one has a exploded view that i could possibly get a copy of that would be great. I have spent many days searching the net also trying to get in touch with some body at global but it seems like a ghost town there. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

I'm a new member to rcu and to RC as well as nitro LOL <=total noob ;-)>

i have seen some interesting ideas, i thought i read somewhere in one of the RC mags i picked up at books a million something about a hydro transmission.... <like a torque converter> on one of the larger gas powered buggies.... could this help with the stalling issue?

A torque converter would be ideal. I have not seen anything like that - do you have any more information about it?

Reiko

sadly i was mistaken what i saw was oil tuned diff.... but i have seen something to a tq converter for gocart i know... if u had a machine shop maybe u could reverse engineer one should be as simple as an impeller attached to the o-shaft of the engine with a viscus fluid coupling to another impeller to the i-shaft on xmission
