Maxx Crawler Project

Hello,
Im new to RC Crawling, I just got a Traxxas Revo, and ive had a sportmaxx laying around, ive decided to try and make it into a rock crawler, however im having some difficulty with the concept...

1. The TRX 2.5 has trouble idling while sitting still (the engines are made for air intake at high speeds), so i dont believe the engine can stay alive long enough for crawling.

2. The stock suspension on my maxx isnt good enough, not enough travel, and the truck isnt even high enough off the ground.

3. Tires... not sure what to use for those.

Any help would be appreciated, ive solved the problem of a larger fuel tank, welded my own out of aluminum.
Does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks, Matt

lose the nitro motor unless your super attached to it, then run two electric fans on it, one on intake one on heat sink

lock the a-arms and lock the diff build a chassi and some links to four link it

moabs or lsts ive herd are good

and search it i know there is a tire thread like 10 down and ive seen stuff on maxxes before to

what he said, but it might be easier to sell it and buy an e maxx for that project

I really dont want to go electric, simply because i want a challenge. :D

well, I hope you like spending a lot of money on unneccisary parts and such. Nitro crawlers are NO GOOD at all. They kill clutches and all kinds of stuff. No one who has a seriously crawler uses nitro.

No one uses a nitro for a crawler for the simple fact that they don't make enough torque at low rpms to climb carefully over anything.

while nitro sucks for crawling he could do it if he wants a challenge

he would have to build a new tranny that lowwered the gearing all the way down to have full throtal be a super slow walk and have a bunch of fans and run it real rich, then buy a few extra motors for when his blows up, but by then he problly have a half way cool crawler and end up hateing it and decide to put his half finised project in the circular file

Well, ive put the os .18 engine back in the maxx, and im starting on an aluminum tranny case that, its going to have a fan motor in it blowing on the cooling head. My dad and i have also made a larger air intake for it, also made out of aluminum with a rubber end. The truck is no longer dieing at idle, it can idle for almost 2 minutes, im sure i wont be idling that long when crawling. The one problem i have now is, like mentioned before, the clutch and transmission. Im not sure where to go with the tranny, ive stripped 2 flywheels and burned up the stock tranny already, i have a 2 speed conversion left but im saving that.
So far the project is going ok, its been about a week since i started it.. but this stupid transmission is driving me insane.

you dont need 2 gears but you need 4wd make sure it is low as posible i buile one for a shafy project i have going at home that is a 9 tooth off the motor to a 86 tooth, then that again twice then it gos to the axles so it is super low and that is for an electric motor, yours should be low also, so you can run the motor at higher throtal with less speed.

Ok. Thanks for all the help guys!

I went to my LHS and theyre gonna machine me new gears basically, they said it should be able to crawl pretty good. Ill post pics as soon as i get my digital camera back.
