Locking diffs?
Hey im a noob to rock crawling, so what does locking the diffs mean? and with a 4link suspension setup, how do you attach the shocks to the links? Thanks

RE: Locking diffs?
locking the difs means you lock up the spider gear in the front a rear differncial. a normal differencial is made to allow the tires to spin at dif speeds for improved turning. a locked dif will make the tires sping at the same time no matter what. the advantage to doing this is you get an incredible amount of traction with it.
as for a 4-link, there are a number of ways to connect shocks. some people have chassis long enough to connect them directly to the axels. another way is to use clamps and slide them onto the lower link and lock it in place using sets. or, like me, i used hex bar and drilled mount holes through the sides so the shock could directly connect to the link. |

Hey, Thanks for the help. Couldnt you just take the axel apart and take out the spider gear? or do you have to lock it.

RE: Locking diffs?
differend ways of doing it. you can buy a diff lock thingy(dunno what they are called), or you can use araldite(epoxy for some). I used araldite and it works really well!! Cheap too!!!

RE: Locking diffs?
if you take out the spider gear then your car wont move lol. its hard to explain without a picture and seeing as im in class i have no way of getting one however i will attempt to explain it lol. basically inside your differencial there is a gear, that then has 3 pinion like gears attached to it. the other gear is where the power comes from and is connected to the drive gears. the inner spider gears are what drive the tires but since there are independently attacked to the drive gear, the tires can spin at differnt speeds.
i just found the link to it so here it is. ecplains how to do it step by step. [link]http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12372&highlight=locking+clod+diff[/link] |
