micro magic vs. fairwind 900
hey
i have a micro magic and my friend has a fairwind 900.
if we were to race, as i hope we soon will.
who do think would win, the micro magic or the fairwind 900 ?
for what reasons?
which conditions favour each boat?
on the upwind leg ?
on the downwind leg ?
all replies are greatly appreciated, thanks !!!

RE: micro magic vs. fairwind 900
Keep in mind a few things when asking that question... what type of 'race' do you plan to do? In sailboat racing, generally things are a little different than in say a powerboat race or car race. Generally races are held on at least 2 points of sail (often more) such as sailing upwind (beating) and then downwind in either a run (wind directly behind you or close to it) or a broad reach (a little more at an angle than dead downwind). Anyway, my point is, what determines a 'winner' depends on some issues. Which boat is able to point higher into the wind when sailing upwind? (this will be faster because you'll have to sail a shorter distance to get to the same point).
Also, on paper, the Fairwind has more sail area and hull length, so it SHOULD be faster--all things being 'equal', but things very rarely are equal! To give you an example.... sometimes in our local fleet we have smaller boats racing together with big ones (they aren't scored against each other though) and sometimes the smaller boats (Victorias) can get the best of some of the bigger boats (Seawinds) just because the Vic skippers are better sailors--they know how to use the conditions they have and tactics better. So, there are a lot of variables involved.
Now that I've made things WAY too complicated... Let us know how the race comes out. And HAVE FUN!

in theory the Fairwind!
Now for facts,
Seawind vs MicoMagic...SW wins! Tried as much as I could, but not possible, both boats have upgraded rigs and sails!
The MM can "surf" or "plane" easily IF built light!

You know what might be a really fun race.... MM vs. Victoria (Upgraded of course)! They're a little closer to the same size, and the Vic is a great performer... especially if you upgrade the rig and sails.

RE: micro magic vs. fairwind 900
In our group we have a Fairwind (a.o.) and a lot of experienced MM sailors, on most occasions the MM wins.
In fact it bugged the Fairwind owner so much, he has removed the bulky keel from his hull and is currently changing it for a Saphir keel & bulb, which is much thinner and lowers the CoG considerably.
Once the modifications are complete, the (race-tuned) Fairwind will beat the MM and even be competition for the Saphirs in our group.
Regards, Jan.
