Where do I buy Carbon Tube in Canada/USA?
Hi guys...
Where in the world can I buy 10mm OD (8mm ID) Carbon tube for a mast in Canada or the US?
I need 2m (6')(72")(2000mm) in a single piece.
Thanks!
Goose

Goose,
You may try Adrian Olson's GRP Model Yachts in California @ www.modelyachting.com. They have hardware, masts, rigging etc for the Wheeler class yachts which are large! Adrian's e-mail is [email protected]

You may have a hard time finding a 72"small diameter tube. But a inside ferrule joint can work well. Wrapped carbon fiber is very stiff if desired. I've used 8P tube described at http://www.skyburner.com/skyshark/p-series.html
Also take a look at the RC mast tube available at http://www.midwestmodelyachting.com/CFMastTubes.asp

Thanks Jaelon...
I am reading up on ferrule joints now and that seems like a viable solution.
What did you use for the ferrule?
Cheers

I used another piece of hollow carbon tube whose OD fits snugly in the ID of the main mast pieces. Solid carbon tube would be a stronger ferrule but probably not necessary. A little epoxy could be added for permanent joining.

Cool, thanks...
Given the length of the mast, I am thinking about a two-piece arrangement.
What do you guys think about a metal sleeve over one end and the ferrule epoxied into the other piece as a solution?
Is there a better/easier way to do it?
Cheers

V6GOOSE:
I actually used carbon to carbon with enought medium cyano glue, and it becomes harder than metal.
In fact i just drilled a 1/8" hole at the top of the mast and cyanoed the 1/8" tube for the crane. it never moved!!.
try to get a carbon tube wich its inner diameter fits another Outside diameter in a carbon tube. most of the Us stores has many carbon tube sizes, but sometimes they do not have diameters that allow the "telescopic2 effect.
i found carbon spars at http://www.r2hobbies.com/products.php?cat=136 and they are telescopic, it means the smaller fits the inner dia of the bigger. just use a 4" inner tube as a ferrel and you are done!!!
Hope this can help, prices looks great too.

We use carbon tubes and ferrules all the time in stunt kites, up to 13mm diameter. Contact [link=http://www.chicokites.com/]GWTW-kites [/link] and ask Steve or Chris about the specific diameter of tube you need, and tell them you'll need a ferrule for joining the two pieces

Hi Dias...
Thanks for that. I had seen this and unfortunately the 10mm OD Carbon tube I'm after only comes in 60" lengths.
My mast is around 1825mm (~72") long so a splice or ferrule is needed.
Cheers
