RC yacht on open sea

Hi

What do you think about one meter yacht (like Voyager) on real sea with waves and not light wind
Is it possible or need only plain water?

Hi There,

Yes u can, they are raced on the sea around the world. Only thing is that you need a rescue boat just in case things go badly.

andreyvlru,
There should be no problem with sailing the boat in salt water as long as the normal precaution of removing the salt from the boat is done. Preventing salt from entering the boat is a very good idea, at least as much as possible. Protecting the electronic and metal parts of the boat is the important part.
As to sailing on the 'open seas', it just depends on the state of the sea, weather, etc. Small boats sail better in 'small' seas, right? Force 12 winds and 3 meter waves are not usually very good for small boats! - lol

Sure 3meters waves is not good, and i can't to control my boat in such waves (can't to see top of mast :(
But i aw worried about max half meter waves. Is it sufficiently comfortable for 1meter sail boat?

Some guys wrote wind 10m/sec is not problem for boat. It is enough for me.

andreyvlru,
As long as the waves are not 'breaking', I think you might have a chance of sailing a 1M boat. Maybe not very well, and I know I don't think I would want to be riding the boat. Imagine the size of the waves in 'scale' with your boat. That would mean waves the height of the mast (+/-), and that is a bit large! Would it work? I don't know, but it wouldn't be 'comfotable'...

Hi andreyvlru,

I've been running (sailing) my Voyager for a year and a half now in almost every condition (wind and environment) you can think of and I must say she performs very well.

Like Doc already mentioned, the hull needs to be watertight (which my Voyager isn't, water gets in along the mast and jib fairlead) but sailing in high winds with 50-60 cm high waves is possible.

You'll have to trim her so she searches her own way, as the waves will not always let you see where she's going, but it's nice to watch her run down the waves; sailing in those high wind conditions needs yourconstant attention.

I haven't sailed her at sea, because the hull isn't 100% watertight and the little amount of water that will enter the hull is salt, which would damage my electronics.

My Voyager takes about anything you throw at her, in terms of sailing conditions, but the hull and the rig need to be adapted to be able to hold up.
If you want to know about my mods, pm me your emailadress and I'll mail you the Word file and some pics.

The pictures were taken, sailing on one of the large lakes in our province, with a gusty 5Bft.

Regards, Jan.

Hi there again,

As I previously said there is no real problem of sailing your boat on the sea. Like the guys say she needs to be watertight, however the electronics need to be watertight not necessarily the boat. If you cant make her completely watertight put some boyancy in the hull like bubble wrap to make sure that if she takes on water then she wont sink completely. My previous point, make sure you have a rescue boat handy. The international one metre guys successfully sail on the sea arround the world in all kinds of wind. The deal is that the higher the wind the smaller your rig (sails) need to be. if you havent got a storm rig then furl your sails before you launch, that way you will be able to keep control. If all else fails buy a submarine.:D

regards

Mike
