1/4 scale Fokker DR1

RE: 1/4 scale Fokker DR1
There is two different gear wings. The early one has a ply leading edge 1/3 back and the rest fabric covered, and the later is all ply covered and is a bigger wing. I think the later wing starts around S/N 500ish.

RE: 1/4 scale Fokker DR1
I've been flying my BUSA DR1 for 3 years now and really enjoy it. No question that it is a sport scale plane and I know (now) that the scheme is not correct in many ways but it is always one of the biggest draws at any field I fly at! I fly at 3200' ASL and I went with a Zenoah 45 for power. No nose weight necessary! I pinned the joints with small dowels and I added a few gussets here and there because I was planning from the beginning to use the larger gas engine. I am also waiting to see what GTM will turn out for the new 1/4 scale DR1. I would like to take another crack at building a more accurate scale plane this time!

That's an important one! So are you going to start a build thread for your ''trainer'' DrI? I'd be interested.

i don't think it would be appropriate to do a BUSA build here on the scale board as it isn't really scale.
i will do some pictures and posts on the mods to show what has been done based on the info from you and the others who have participated here though.
this airplane has became a lot more interesting since you guys have been posting facts about it here.
some things i never even knew about till i started this thread such as the wing failures that casued many pilots to lose their lives due to poor production methods and whatnot.
makes one want to do justice to it when modeling no matter how far out of scale it is.
i will do a build on the GTM DR1 though when i get it.
so far i haven't seen one on the 1/4 version, so it would be fun to do.

Don,
i see now what you mean about the rudder.........it's a biggee eh?
got this plane almost framed now.
did the tips like they are suppose to be, and it actually shaved a couple ounces.
not going to make a build thread out of the BUSA DR1 here, but will post pictures of some of the improvements soon.
sorta waitin on a cowl from GTM at the moment.........then i can finish the firewall location for the DLE 30.

GUNS..............just spent a painful 3 days (should have learned from the LeRhone kit) building 2 Williams Bros Spandaus............the plastic used in these kits is more like soft nylon.
has anyone bought and built the guns from Balsa USA?
if so, please describe them

RE: 1/4 scale Fokker DR1
I started a 1/4 scale set of BUSA Spandu's and gave up on them, some of the parts were so
small I had to use tweezers. Now for the guys that build plastic, It would probably be a
piece of cake.
Now the 1/3 scale set wasn't too bad, if you take your time they come out pretty nice, that's
what I used on my GTM 1/3 Dr.1

seriously though, the WB kits are painful.
even 800 grit will wipe more plastic away than needed. that or i am just too picky these days[sm=lol.gif]

RE: 1/4 scale Fokker DR1
I haven't built any WB guns for a few years, I don't remember them being that way.
Maybe the new company that took them over changed the material.
I've got a GTM 1/3 Dr.1 on order also, but can't start on it till I get my wosrkshop setup,
If I remember how I did the first one, this one should go faster. May have to go back and
check my own build thread............

I think he makes a run of a certain number of each of his kits so he always has some on hand.
