Kinda hard to read but it looks like it might be a tad over 16" Thats bigger than the cowl on the Mystery Ship, its only 14 1/8, I discovered today that the 1/3 N 28 cowl sits nicely down inside with room to spare. The Seimens had an 11 cyl eng am I correct, a rotary? This is 1/3 sale isnt it? Worse n a kid, always askin questions and stuff.

Thanks John

The cowl is 15-3/8" dia. and it's 1/3 scale. The plane had an 11 cylinder rotaryengine. The crankcase diameter must have been big to fit all those cylinders!

The interesting thing about the Siemens engine was that it was geared to the prop so that it turned in the opposite direction as the prop. There is a metal frame inside the cowl with a bearing that supports the engine in front. The prop rotated 900 rpm counter-clockwise and the engine rotated 900 rpm clockwise. The gear also allowed them to use the four bladed prop. They started out with a really huge two-bladed prop but the undercarriage was so tall the plane was hard to land.

Jim is this the same aircraft as Alan Flowers masterful 1/6 scale? It's a really unique aircraft, and real neat looking on an odd sort of way.

I just received my cowl today, and it is a beauty! Also, the post office managed to not dent it during it's journey, which is good as I plan on making the early version with full cowling and the not quite as ugly rudder.

Are you going to go spinner-less? There are photos of that AC with the spinner on.
I am thinking of doing the DIII of Ltn Joachim von Ziegesar, or perhaps that of Gottsch, if I think I can make the color of the metal panels match.
J
Oh, and I'll also have the change the wingtips and ailerons for the earlier version.

I'll probably go with the spinner. The same guy who did the cowl is doing spinners, but they're not ready yet.

Do you have more pictures of Greven's plane? I only have one picture of it and it doesn't have the spinner on it.

Now, that ain't right!

BTW, I checked the cowl against the plans and the cowl is 1/32" bigger, which I think is fine. My plans probably shrank anyway because of the dry winter conditions in my house.

You have to allow for the "shrinkage factor" (Seinfeld)

Sorry Dave I shipped them all the same day. I think that donkey that delivers out your way must be stuck in the snow. Really the cowls are secretly being held hostage until my wood parts arrive..... Let me know if you get them today Dave. Shrinkage factor or as we call it turtle syndrome is in full effect here. Jim, I don't even have 32nds on my ruler.....yes,.. I do own one. Have a great new year everyone.

There was enough air space that nothing was damaged! It is a hair big but should work out OK

They are lineup pics (multiple aircraft a row) but if you look hard enough you can see the spinner is on. I know there is one (or two?)pics is in the Osprey book on NRII, but OTF usually has the same pics in a larger size. I'll see what I can come up with. The best pic is of course the one without the spinner.

J
BTW, I'll also have to redo the elevator for the early DIII. :>(
