I have all my airplanes at home right now for the first time in a couple or three years and from the looks of my shop I either have to build smaller or just simply quit when I finish whats in work. Problem is I need help to hang some of them so they're sitting around on the floor in the mean time.
John your back burner must be huge.
Paul how many of those turnbuckles will you need for the DH 2? Lots of rigging on that baby.

I can only stand in awe at flying a model bigger than my van! But man oh man what a "model" that would be, if had the detail of TFOKKER's EV!

Well here we go .... I decided that I would do the Arizona 1/2 scale DH2. Talking to Jamie @ AZ. he said he would produce the 1/2 scale kit by the end of the month and the plans would also be done by then.

I will post as many pics as possible and as always your comments are always.....sometimes welcome!

Tonite I will post all the electronics ,servos batteries switches and powerplant I will be using for this build.

Looking forward to your build Paul. What engine are you thinking of using?

Probably my DA150 with a prop extension

The DA150 is only 16.5hp. The full size DH2 had a 100hp Gnome engine. Even a rough power estimate (100hp * 50%) would be 50hp....You're not even close. And probably need more than 50 because of lower Coeff of lift of a scale airfoil.
Also, watch out for prop extensions. They can introduce a lot of torsional problems.

The math of scaling power doesn't work that way. At 1/2 scale, the wing area is 1/4 and the cubic volume of the structure is 1/8th. That plus the lighter materials we use his model will probably weigh less than 10% of the full scale, and have a resulting much lower wing loading.

Look at it another way: If a half scale needed 50hp then by that logic a 1/4 scale would need 25hp... yet most 1/4 WWI jobs fly on a G26 or G38 ish power level just fine.

I bet the DA150 will be more than enough.

You are correct. This DA 150 pulled around a 97LB DR 1 Fokker Tri-plane ....sooooo a 60-65 bi-plane will be noooo problem!

Bingo the empty weight of the DH2 was approx. 1000 Lbs, at 1/2 scale and an assumed weight of 70 lbs, we're under 10% of the AUW. The lift coefficent can be dynamically calculated however IMHO there really is no simple and accurate way to determine what the lift coefficent really is. Case in point this same 150 CC engine is able to fly a 42% DR1 at almost 90 Lbs and later the 1/2 scale DVI at approx. 84 Lbs with no issues. Bolt it up and lets get er goin.

I think it was Pat McCurry that first explained thinking volumetrically when considering model requirements to me. Though no one has shown a formula for thrust requirements relative too weight. Thrust doesnt always convert to a given speed due to pitch variations and the weight and lift of the aircraft determine the speed at which it flies or stalls. It's all too technial for me R2.
So lets get those boxes opened up and suffer some construction. Barry you're gonna be watching Paul real close right?

Watching who???.....LOL.. yeah we're going to be doing the DH2 and the 1/2 Hanriot at the same time. I've got to finish the Dr1 and the DV first though. We're supposed to do the inventory on those boxes tomorrow after work but I'm sure Paul already has that stuff out and is probably making airplane noises as he waves the parts around. Actually Paul really doesn't need supervision, only when he picks up the glue bottle, or something sharp and pointy, or if fire is involved, or if ......awww,.never mind, I'll watch him...

Yeah that will be the day........
The DR I had it first....sold the plane ...kept the motor
The D6 had it second and up till Santa/December of 2010....thats when it received the DA170 upgrade!
Now the DA150 is sitting on the bench looking for a new home.....DH2?[X(]

Kool project guys, but I got you beat. I started my 1/1 scale Nieuport this month. Of course, I'll have to sit in it to fly mine.

See you guys in July, we have ODP on our calendar.
