I am thinking ofusingarobart retractable tailwheel on my royal B-17.
anyone had any luck with these? I'll be using the small mechanical
version.

I'm using one in my Hellcat and have not had any issues. My airplane is only about 10 pounds though. Not sure that you would want to use it on anything much heavier. I dressed mine up to be a bit more "Hellcat-ish" but the mechanism itself is unchanged and it seems to work just fine.

I have used the plastic ones in a Top Flite P-40 and a LaGG 3. Both about 10 pounds. Changed the arms for the P-40 so it would retract through a larger angle. They seem to work fine, although the LaGG didn't last long enough to put any wear and tear on the unit. Photo in the LaGG

I've used the plastic (60/90? size) unit on a TF P-47 for about 13 years now.

Never a hint of trouble. - John.

Thanks guy's for the input. I'm not finished with the b-17 yet, but I'm
guessing it will be 10-12 lbs or so. I plan to call Tower and order
one now, if there not on back-order.

Thanks again,
Jon

I am rebuilding a very poorly built Royal B-17 right now that I bought last summer. Check out the Royal thread. I installed a Robart retractable tail wheel a couple weeks ago. A long stroke 3/8ths cylinder to move it.
