Default Finally finished pictures of my Balsa USA 1/3 Pup !

The details will never be done as we all know on some scale-ish builds But I am just waiting for the right day ,time, and nerves to do the maiden.. had it together today going over all the endless small things to check tighten and worry over. The engine (3W 78 twin) is set and running/idling pretty nice, everything is zeroed out on the trims, on board kill switch checked, etc. I am not sure I will ever feel like it is CHECKED enough, but thats the nervous high you get on a long kit build...

Anyhow, here are some pics, its not based on any real airplane..just things in general I like.. no attempt to be right.. just appealing to me. My coat of arms insignia is sort of a play on my Mom and Dads name, I sort of abandoned working on it when my dad was taken by cancer, so I have some reminders of him on the plane...

I'll just have to come over and take that sorry Pup off your hands. You need more practice building so I'll help you out by depositing another kit at your doorstep!

All kidding aside it looks very nice!

hahahaha, man I won't live long enough to start one from scratch !

A buddy of mine stole a framed up pup at an auction 2 years ago .. Someone was doing a great job on it. We have been considering making it a semi scale Camel instead of a pup.. But wow, it makes it even a bigger job...

I am anxious and scared to fly mine. I am not even sure I can haul it in one trip to the field yet They sure look great online.

It looks like it will be a real floater compared to my 1/4 D7 ..

yellercamp, there will be NO room for anyone in your shop once you get it framed up

Drube, yes I painted the pilot, he has been sitting on a shelf watching the slow progression for more than a couple years.

Abu, now I am not only an owner ... but a member of the "Pups for men club?" hahhaha remember the "Hair for men club" advertisements .....

'Hair for Men' club- hahaha! I'm the proud owner of a fuzzy chrome dome! It's great for determining wind direction. I have a Boddington 1/6 Pup 'in the bones' that I need to finish so I can join the club!

I sort of have my own cheap covering and painting routine...

I apply Sig stix it, then cover with the uncertified ceconite from http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalo...itefabric2.php, I like to brush on more Stixit on the glued areas, I do not dope or seal the open cloth ... I then paint the plane with foam brushes and some detail brushes with cheap Acrylic Hobby shop paints,Which seals the cloth up decent..without being heavy. I really like an aged used looking plane, and the way I do it helps that. I don't shoot for a even perfect look. Then I do some airbrush and chalk detail, and 2 light coats of clear... a HEAVY DUSTING REALLY,I try not to put on a heavy even coat, I am just looking to hold down the details, and seal the cloth up a bit more.
I covered and painted this 1/3 scale Pup for under $100. I see the ceconite has gone up some (like everything).

one thing to keep in mind ,The ceconite is easy to cover with, I seldom even have any areas needing shrinking, BUT REMEMBER, this is full scale stuff, and if you don't go slow on the heat iron it will CRUSH your plane :P hahahah

i did the same type of techniques as my Fokker D7, except I used Super Coverite on it ...Also there is a thread on a buddies Modified Flair DR1 around here somewhere .

My D7 for any that might have missed it, and care to look. Great kit! http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_78...tm.htm#7859709

bundu, the gun is scratch built, the main tube is an aluminum roller from a copier. some brass tubing on the barrel end..I vacuum formed the gun receiver, I used some scrap woods for the handles and wind guard, the sight is a slice of pvc, and piano wire. I also used sliced pvc pipe for the gauge frames on the dash.. real low tech but .. so are most of my tastes

Enjoy it... I just put a G26 into my 1/4scale BUSA Pup. I needed a bit more power. Let us know how the 3W does.

You will love the Xoar Scimitar props... mighty nice old time look.

My 3W runs SO good on the test stand, it will probably never see more than half throttle on the plane.. it is overkill for sure... But when I got a chance at a smooth running twin motor at a good price.. it made the decision for me.

those XOAR props are beautiful .... I haven't looked at the price..but I think I can make an accurate guess. If I don't start some bad habit of breaking props on the Pup..That pretty prop just might have to be an upgrade sometime.

Looks like you're ready for that maiden flight, best of luck to you! Just throttle up, stay on the right rudder & she'll be airborne before you know it!

I've got a 1/3 scale Pup with 4 flyings seasons on it. In calm wind, it is an absolute dream to fly & even in wind it has pretty good authority to still do what it's told. Mine weighs about 40 lbs, powered by a GT-80. It's heavier than normal because it's carrying a fully automatic paintball gun and 9oz CO2 tank, plus the custom bulkheads & hardware to mount the system. It's got so much wing area it's still quite a floater though.

How much does your Pup weigh?

It looks like from the pictures that you used pushrods on your elevator, I did the same thing too! Not having much experience with pull-pull systems, pushrods just seem more secure to me for some reason & this being my first 1/3 scale plane, I figured I had enough learning to do without one more thing to figure out. I was right, it's worked out pretty well for me.

Greg

Greg, I think I have seen some video of your pup with the air gun setup.. I have watched and read everything I could find on them for years One thing I did notice reading peoples comments, the plane has some benefits of being on the heavier end. I kept seeing people at the 40 pound mark and happy. Possibly I even read some comments of yours . So I didn't even try to make it light..I just went with what I like to do, and didn't add any crazy weight where not needed.

I think I was right at 40 pounds before balancing, and it took under 2 pounds more. I added a HEAVY steel weight mount early on to the build, it allows me to put my weight out nearly to the front of the cowl, without attaching to the cowl. i also have my servos pretty far forward.

I am not sure if I have mentioned it but the entire tail on my Pup is bolt on. Otherwise it wouldn't have come out of the basement. So, since I knew there would be extra weight reinforcing for that, I did build a slight airfoil in to the stabilizer. That supposedly makes a little lift, and might offset the extra weight. I made the tail skid spring loaded, and I did build a non scale but functioning bungie sprung main gear.

I have a lot of pics and info on an older pup thread as well...

Yep, how many lamps have you knocked over with this one? Hmmmm? Nice work again my friend. I hope eventually they will make a 1/3 scale Fokker Dr1 or Fokker DVIII so my wife can scream at me when I try to walk around the house with it. Foodstick, your lumber yard Kits are getting bigger and bigger. Next you'll be building a full sized homebuilt!

No room for lamps in the shop with this crazy thing !!! hahah

I don't know if you have heard the rumors but SUPPOSEDLY a 1/3 Albatross is in the works at BALSA USA ... and me with absolutely no where to put the planes I have now !

I do think a 1/3 DVIII would be a logical project, big..yet not so much rigging to deal with. I think that plane would be an easier one to blow up the plans of a 1/4 scale kit.

As to the large DR1, i read on a thread somewhere that One of the big 3D people (forgot the name dangit) is going to put out a 63% arf? Top wing 6 feet off the ground? is that insane or what ?

I doubt I will ever build a full scale, though I do have friends that have, and are doing so right now...mainly RVs. If however they were doing a WW1 replica or semi scale, it would be hard not to hang out at the shop quite a bit !

Building a 1/2 scale DR 1, the third photo you can see the wing of my 1/3 scale DVIII(111") also fly a 1/3 scale DVII.
Wiggle and giggle and you can get it built.
