I can't help it, I always get a kick from seeing full scale pilots get so excited about a model airplane!

I thought that was a cool plane when it came out as a kid. Henry Halfke(?) made some neat planes.

I checked the Brodak site and could not find the kit. Is still in production and where did you get it?

I have two origional 'Jeep' kits! Wooo- ah-hah-hah-ha-ha, and they're all mine! The Jeep is the sweetest flyer of the Coverite kits. I converted a 'D' to an 'X'. Unfortunately, no photos. It was a pretty good flying airplane. The 'E' is little more 'draggy'. You'll love that 'D'! The '30's race planes ROCK!
Can't wait to see your build!!!

Converting the D to an X is what I was thinking of doing. No wheel pants, plus I just think it looks cool. Either way, it's a great looking design. I did a rubber powered version of the D about 30 years ago and just loved watching it fly around in a banked turn, with those elliptical wing tips.

ARUP,

I had a Jeep for 12 years! lost the engine at an inopportune moment and the brittle wood just shattered on impact. I absolutely love my Model E I built it back in 1996 and re-built it in 1996, then re-covered it in 2003. It is still flying and is still one of the best flying models I own. I added a set of fiberglass Ryan wheel pants to it, but if I had to do it over would have re-made the Gee Bee styleout of wood. The nice thing about this kit is it now includes Vacuum formed Wing root fairings which will give the airplane a much better finished look.

Jim, Ilike the Xbut I also love the big Wheel pants of the D hehehe

Woo Hoo!

Yes, wheel pants look great...do you fly from grass? Nice to hear how much you like those planes! The Jeep always appealed to me too.

What I've also been mooning about is the Flying Models plans for the 1/4 scale Gee Bee D, which are also by Haffke. He only used a two stroke .60 in his. I love it that he didn't over power it. I'm thinking keep it light, power with an OS 95V four stroke or something similar. Use Dubro 5 inch big airwheels and make it an X.

But the smaller SOY kit is a great choice too, and fits easier in the car. So many projects...

Jim,

You saw where I fly most when you visited the museum this summer  The wheel pants have always worked just fine off of grass (as long as it is short)  That 1/4 scale D would be very cool to fly.  Honestly built light the OS .95 would haul that airplane extremely well! Both of my 11 lb TF fighters (P-40 and Corsair built by me) Fly with plenty of authority on OS .91 Surpass II's

Oh, I wondered if that was your RC field too...what a fabulous thing to be able to do, full scale and RC off such a beautiful field.

Good to know the pants work off grass, and the power and weights of your TF warbirds.

Here's the one I built from the original Coverite kit several years ago. Had an OS .46SF in it.

TLH101- very nice!
US185Damiani- that kit looks very complete. I like to pull glass parts from the ABS 'molds' to use on models. I like your Charlie Brown Christmas tree!

I always wanted to build one of these and before I ever did they were gone, maybe I'll do it now that Brodak has resurrected them. Good idea to make glass parts from the ABS ones Michael.

TLH Wow I Echo the very nice! hope mine looks as good when I'm finished!

ARUP yes it is very complete and very nice. One problem I found off the bat is the wing plans. They are reduced size. When they consolidated them to one sheet I think the printer may have taken liberties. I don't think that was intentional but nevertheless still an issue as there are no measurements in the plans or drawings and the easy solution isn't an option since My Gee Bee E plans are MIA LOL

I'm going to call on Monday to see if they're aware of the discrepancy.

The Charlie brown tree is classic I love Peanuts LOL My obsession with WW1 airplanes started because of Snoopy and the Red Baron! LOL

Ialso am going to use Hangar 9 Ultracoat on this one in the interest of weight savings. I have an Enya 53 4C i just picked up for it. I'm tired of the small inverted 2 stroke hassles.

More to come!

If you need them I have the plans and can copy them piecemeal no charge on my work copier (8.5"x11" sheets) if you don't mind piecing them together. If you want them whole it is a little more effort (gotta drive into downtown Louisville) and would be the cost of copying plus postage. My time would be free, though!
