RE: Dave Johnson 1/4 scale Albatros DIII
To Mr. Barzini: I have the plans also a complete kit. I also have the building instructions for this fine aircraft. Now if you want the building instruction I'll be happy to burn you a set. Triplane.

Mr. Barzini; No; they are more in-depth. They came with a set of plans that I purchased over the internet a while back. They are better then the MAN plans of Feb 2005. Triplane.

RE: Dave Johnson 1/4 scale Albatros DIII
I've been building one off and on for about 3 years now (I'm easily distracted). I've got the fuse framed up and mostly sheeted. I started on the wings a few weeks back. Now, if I can just not get too distracted with some repaints of Flyzone Albatri, and a Fokker Dr1 that I'm doing (it's all your fault Cocobear).
There a good build thread on The Aerodrome Forum http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/fl...tros-diii.html While it's closed, there is a great deal of helpful info there.
Here's how I plan to finish mine.
I have unfortunately joined the ranks of the unemployed as of last week, so for now, I have no excuse to not get some real progress done on it while I search for gainful employment.
Fokker Triplane, I would greatly appreciate obtaining a copy of the instructions that you have as well.

If you haven't built the stab yet, you might want to check the location of the the middle and outer ribs. I made some airfoil shaped ribs out of 3/16" balsa and then added them outside the 1/4" square as shown on the plans. I then removed the 1/4" square.
PS: If you do a search for caning reed, yuo should find several suppliers. I use 1.5mm for "wire" TEs and 3.25mm for tube TEs.(1/4 scale AC).

Im not sure how the stab goes together? The article says make a hole for a 1/4" tube and the plan shows a 1/4" balsa spar going through the fuselage? If I had a picture it would make things easier. My plans are reduced 1/3 scale plans.Im building a box spar for the wing also.

I think that will depend on if your spar is round (carbon fiber perhaps) or square stock, which is what is on my plans (the 1/4 scale ones). Why the discrepancy between Dave article and plans? Dunno. I'll be on the tail feathers on mine as soon as I build one more aileron and crank out the bottom wing, hopefully this week.
Your best reference online is undoubtedly jtisch's DJ 1/4 DIII build thread on theaerodrome.com (from 2007 to 2009).

Also Dave's build thread here on his 1/4 scale DVa (while different) is also helpful.

(Pardon me if I've already mentioned those)

I deviated from way shown on the plans and my stab is a plug-in affair. It's a bit more work but I can cover the stab halves before they are attached.

The rudder cables are just running free, which might pose a problem if I need to replace them. I did put in tubes for the elevator cables, but not full length tubes. I'll try to get some pics of the LG Monday. I have the Windsock Datafile, a series of C&C articles, and other bits and bobs for reference.

RE: Dave Johnson 1/4 scale Albatros DIII
Here's a couple of pics of my set-up. Direct nyrod to rudder tiller, and short pices of inner nyrod for pull-pull cable guides for elevator. I think this is about the same way John did it.
views are from the underside.
The lite ply box in front of the rear former is to hold the extension of the tail skid mount up into the fuse. Dave Johnson recommended this modification.
(I haven't made the cut out in the bottom stringer for the hardwood tail skid piece yet).
Hope these help!

Barzini,
Here's what I make. I have the same one on my scratchbuilt 1/4 scale Dv. I have to make one for Luckydog too. Sorry for the delay Mike. The pictures in this ad are for the 1/3 scale Albi.

Thanks,
Martin

Life is what happens when you really want to be making airplanes. I think I have all the plumbing problems in my house fixed (fingers crossed). I am also "mentoring" a high school senior with his project and that is on my bench now. I hope I can get back to the Albie after the 18th.
