Default ESM Sea Fury 80' - Build log

I am getting slightly ahead of myself as the kit has not yet arrived on this side of the atlantic, but i thought i would start a thread on this as i cant seem to find one already running.

The model in question is the ESM 80'' span Sea Fury and i hope to power the model with one of the ASP/Magnum 5 cyl radials. If i cant get that to fit then it will get a Laser 300 or 360 V twin. I have also ordered my model with no paint so i can do some extra detail work and apply my own colour scheme.

Below are a few details of the model, if anyone else is interested or has information please post it.

That's a gorgeous plane! The ASP400R should "just" fit if the 250mm is measured from the slightly opened cowl flaps (as per the drawing).

I'll be watching closely your build.

Very true about the flaps, also the cowl length is misleading as its only 170mm from firewall to spinner backplate. I cant wait to get the model in hand so i can start seeing how its all going to fit

C43,
I'm also a big fan of the Sea Fury and was also thinking about ordering one un painted. We have the big Toledo show coming up in April on this side of the pond so I hope to get a look at one of these beauties.
I will be following your thread with great interest.

Good flying,
paul

Hi Paul

i have 2 ESM models, the La7 and the P39. The La7 is just out of the box, although i did grubby it up and bit, the P39 was ordered 'naked' and has been painted in the colours i chose. i have added a pic of the P39 just for general interest and a pic of the paint job i plan for the Fury, but mine will have different codes.

Ty, i am hoping for similar results from the sea fury. I am also hoping the P39 still looks like that after its first flight!

Regarding my engine selection i am beginning to lean towards a Laser 300v or 360v. The reason for this is having looked at that review from troy built models the area for cooling air to escape looks very small. also if i fill that area with hot exhuasts then i dont think the engine will stay happy for long.i alsodont fancy is having to clean the entire model as the radial is pretty oily and moving the firewall aft will be a pain in the backside. The Laser engines on the other hand a 10mm shorted than needed so a few layers of ply will have it perfect. i also have total confidence in the reliablity of the Laser engines but dont in the radial due to past experience.

If i do go the laser route i cant decide if i should use the 300v (which pulls my 80'' ESM La7 brilliantly) or go mad and put a big 24x8 prop on it and storm about at very low rpm on the long stroke 360v.

hmmmm

C43, you won't get the "radial" sound with the Laser, even if they're great engines. Those Sea Fury engines should scream...Food for thought.

I get to see sea furies fly quite often and they dont 'scream' like our model radials do. most ww2 engines run at approx 3000 rpm at full power and yet our models run much faster. the radial for example at aboit 7000rpm. the laser will run at between 6000 and 7000. but as the laser has larger cylinders you get a bigger thump than the little pop from the smaller pots on theradial. my la7 sounds ace with the V twin in the nose. also even with a radial it wont sound exactly like a sea fury, and i would rather it be reliable and easy to keep clean. i will for sure wait for the model before i make a fianl choice

sadly i cant seem to find a decent video of a laser 360 in action. in any case the full size sounds ace

i am not sure exactly. it could be the airframe, could the the supercharger. sounds pretty deadly whatever it is. but most ww2 planes have whistle, especially DB605 powered aircraft.

I am still undecided about the engine for mine, i want a radial, but i also want an engine/airframe combo that always reliable and not covered in loads of oil. i will see how the engine performs in my flying test bench and then make up my mind

Nice looking planes, I spent the last couple of years building a Vailley 101" sea fury and just about have it done. Glassed and painted to resemble Reno racer, BAD ATTITUDE. Should be ready for maiden mid April or so, we still have a bit of winter here.Pat. http://www.rccanada.ca/rccforum/albu...&pictureid=601

I am using a Moki 215 for this airplane. I will try to include a few pictures if I can download them. I am on holidays in the Dominican Republic and the Internet is very very slow. If it does not work I will resend when I get home on the weekend. Pat

i know the moki is the engine of choice for that model, a friend here has the same combo, but both are in boxes at the moment!

I found out yesterday that delivery of the model to the UK is now not expected until august. Bah!
