Name the Plane Contest: Isn't the silver 1/2 scale job a Nieuport 11?
In ike's pic, I can see thelittle cowl fairings on the fuselage side. Art, please make a decree here......
It's always easier to identify somethingwhen it comes down inone piece, right?

It looks like the 3 of you were photographed while watching one of my less than perfect landings, during Art's ''Greg's gonna do 5 Perfect Landings in a Row'' challenge!

Look at these three monkeys!................

Greg
(the key is Greg to fail sooo miserably that he dosent come back....like in the case with me and Art.....I couldnt even land on my wheels!...only on the top wing of my tripe!)
Couple of weeks ago we did the same exercise and all I remember is after 8-9 attemps ... someone that looked like Art was walking away with his arms straight up in the air ...mumbling...... "Theres no hope.......

I havent seen him since! Voila!
Please dont tell Art I dont want him to find out that my mishaps had a meaning........

Here are a few flight line shots taken on Friday before everybody got there. The flight line gradually got filled up and went around the corner.
I know there are some great shots that people took out there. I hope they get posted soon![X(]

Okay, I got THE flag pole mounted in a place of honor within my shop! The signatures have been clear coated to preserve them.
It's right next to a plaque that Sir Percy gave to pilots who attended the very first Hoosier Dawn Patrol fly-in, way back in 2004. It's also next to a Dawn Patrol movie poster.

Good evening, all - sorry for the delay in uploading pictures - been a long week of traveling since ODP'12. Helen and I are now out in New Hampshire for her annual family reunion - figure I'm about a third of the way through my 3,500 mile three week road tour, and we just spent a good part of today drying out the van after a cooler leak dumped a gallon of water on it’s carpet!
Anyhoo, without further delay, here's a few of the pics I managed to snag this year at . . . . .
the OHIO DAWN PATROL 2012
Thirty-one pilots participated in this year’s Ohio Dawn Patrol, driving in from Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Arkansas and Helen and I came down from Wisconsin. Here’s a couple pics of the pit area, showing the ample shadetree areas that make ODP such a unique flying site:

Due to a schedule conflict, previous year’s Contest Director Joe Westrich couldn’t make the event in 2012, so I volunteered to handle the CD portion of the event. I also got in a bunch of flying with the late Del Johnson’s old “Farm Fokker”, a Balsa USA ¼ scale Triplane. Also snagged a couple pics of it in the early morning, and Helen got a good pic of it in the air:

The real head-honcho of ODP is, of course, the ever-reserved Paul Westrich, who this year had a new Sopwith Camel as well as his Glenn Torrance 1/3 scale Fokker D.VII – Friday night Paul showed us how to do precision work on the Camel using a rotary saw!!!

Quite a few spectacular airplanes made it in to ODP this year – here’s just a few of them!
Keith Zimmerly brought both his 1/3 scale DeHavilland DH-4 and his ½ scale Nieuport 11. Both performed well all weekend long:

Keith did some fabulous flying all weekend long with both planes.

Good friends down from the other end of Ohio Jim Suchy and Jeff Shutic with not only their usual fleet of planes, but also a couple new birds for show and tell.
Jeff brought his “Star-Strutter” for everyone to see, and it really is looking good:

And Jim’s new scratch-built 1/3 scale Siemens Schuckert D.III proved to be quite the performer.

Jim also agreed to test fly ODP’s Barry Vogel’s new Siemens Schuckert:

Unfortunately, wheel came off during the flight – I’ll let you figure how it all came out:

I have some video of the test flight I’ll be posting in a few days – Jim did a very good job getting Barry’s new bird up and down, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of this one at future Dawn Patrols.

The Dawn Patrols
First flight honors each day is one of the fun things about Dawn Patrols – it’s always interesting to see who makes noise first each morning, and how early that first Dawn flight actually takes place!! I didn’t get pics of Friday’s first flights (I was still busy with some set-up things not finished the night before), but I’ll report that Sam Parfitt opened the official flying at 6:11 am or so Friday morning. He also was up early on Saturday under much better skies (albeit not for first flight – Andy Morane earned that honor Saturday), so here are some pics of Sam on Saturday:

As mentioned by Sam several posts ago, later on Saturday his Nieuport 17 gave him some moves in the air that didn’t feel right, and after it turned towards both him and the crowd, he made the decision to dump the plane rather than risk it getting any closer to the pits.
The Contest Director was very impressed by this selfless act, I can assure you!!!

First flight Saturday morning was by Andy Morane with his Fokker D.VII, and his fine pit crew:

Wasn’t sure at first what she was looking at . . .

Oh, yeah, Paul was up early, too, with his Sopwith:

Paul’s Camel wasn’t the only plane out of the Sopwith stables – Andy brought his beautiful Sopwith Triplane:

But most of the Sopwiths at OPD’12 were of course the venerable Balsa USA 1/3 scale Sopwith Pup – at least four were in attendance:

Doug Blakeman brought Billy Thompson’s veteran Sopwith Pup:

Paul Wiley had his classically finished Pup:

Tony Gronas brought his Australian version, resplendent with it’s much maligned kiwi on the side:

Or was that an emu . . . . . . pretty sure it’s NOT a duck!!!
I got a chance to fly Tony’s Sopwith several times during ODP’12, including during a kick-arse session of formation flying with Keith Zimmerly and his DH-4. Keith graciously kept his speed a bit faster than he usually flies so that even the normally slow flying Pup could stay with him!! No pictures from me on that little flying session, but it was one of the big highlights of my Dawn Patrol weekend – thanks Tony and Keith!!!

The star of the Pup squadron may have been Greg Emerick’s version, based on the Old Shuttleworth machine:

This was the plane that earned Greg the apparently much-coveted Greg Emerick award (earned by Greg at last year’s Hoosier Dawn Patrol when he used one of the Pup wings to bash into submission a reasonably innocent flag pole minding it’s own business.
But most of this year’s applicant to the award (you all know who you are!!!) missed part of Greg’s strategy last year – he not only dug himself a huge hole by bashing his Pup just three weeks prior to the Dayton Dawn Patrol, but he had the very same Pup flying at Dayton!!!

Final flying pics from me include a sequence where Greg spotted for Mike Bealmear and the Fokker E.IV:

Mike normally never gets any pictures of his plane in the air (I know THAT feeling well!!), so I took several of Mike and the Eindekker, presented here just for you:

Saturday evening saw the conclusion of the official activities of ODP’12 – the gang had two separate prize drawings to hand out. Balsa USA provided a gift certificate for one of their WWI models, and Glenn Torrance provided panels of his new 1/3 scale four-color lozenge:

And in addition, there was a general raffle for a number of nice prizes, including some cool paintings by Lori Vogel (two panels featuring the Indian head of the Lafayette Escadrille) and micro models via Dave Johnson and Co:

Gotta give shout out to everyone involved in the event – too many by far to mention without me leaving someone out!! But MANY MANY thanks to Paul, Michelle, Jeff, Barry, Gary and EVERYone else with the Cincinnati Aeromodelers – already looking forward to the 2013 edition of this one!!!!
And finally, just a few pictures of some of the faces from ODP’12:
