My CG is right at 5 1/2" back from top LE. By the looks of the elevator on landing in the video, it's just about right

Dick, how many planes have you built over the years? What with your own modeling and all the years with RC Report it has to be a gazillion at least. I have always respected your evaluation of the design, construction and the flight characteristics........if I were looking to build a kit, I always looked for your report first. Thanks for your hard work over the past several decades - ye gads, has it been that long!?

No way to make an accurate count but it approaches 300.

Thanks for the wonderful comments. I had fun over the years, ugly shirts and all!

Slowing down a bit now, but still doing 3 or 4 for High Flight a year

Mark Enderby at Balsa USA has said that the prototype Albatros kits they have been flying have all had firewalls break loose from the engine boxes. They all use DA-85 engines which mount THROUGH the firewall,. This makes the engine box quite long, maybe 7" to 8". This may contribute to the long moment arm created with this engine choice. Any vibration over time may cause the firewall to separate.

They are sending out upgrade packages to all Albatros purchasers that can help minimize this problem. I got mine yesterday and here's what you get:

Hardwood Tri Stock and strip stock, aircraft ply and lite ply, screws and some BUSA CA

I used a DLE-85 engine which has a traditional engine mount, meaning that my engine box is only 3 1/2" in front of the cabane cross piece. I added some tri-stock to engine box and back of firewall and cut the aircraft ply to fit over it

Here's the top piece screwed into place

Those of you using DA-85's will have an engine box at least twice as long as mine, so it may be beneficial to add this modification to your engine box.

Or if you haven't started building the kit, the instructions included tell you how to add it from the beginning.

Got mine today To late My Albatros crashed on flight number 12 Shook itself to pieces Near as I could tell the receiver lost power I had the batteries up front with the fuel tank and when we picked up the the remains the power was unpluged I guess all servo type plugs should be taped or tied together I hope the fix works Don't fly until you put the fix in

Albert sorry to hear of your misfortune. I to was on flight 8. I was at an event with my Albi when all of a sudden ailerons slammed right. Then back to normal flight control, bout 10 seconds later did it again. I had chop throttle and regained control again. Headed back to the field gliding with motor at idle. After landing I taxed back, had another modeler hold the plane. Ran the motor up did not see any problem. Brought the throttle back to my sweet spot for flying ( just over 1/4 ) and found the ailerons would go into rapid movement a little two more click up and they locked full deflation. Ofter checking and think things over. Found the problem to be a loose spark plug cap. Tightened the spring clamp then made sure it felt tight. Fired the motor up and I have not had the problem come back. I did however replace the spring clamp with a hose clamp when I got back home from the weekend. Others might want to range check other throttle setting before flight. It took bout 5-10 seconds for this to appear. On flight 12 inspected motor box and all, things looks good for now.

Was this a 2.4 ghz radio or 72? Also, what kind? Just curious. Had trouble with the plug cap on a new G38 when new. Would glitch out with engine running at any throttle position. Once it was replaced with one from C and H, no problems. This was on 72mhz though.

Vibration is nasty I have over 100 flights on my DH 4 and the muffler has come loose 1 time I have 50 flights on my Neiuport 28 and have zero problems On the neiuport in order to get the motor forward I added plywood sheet to the firewall it is 1 inch thick I believe this is the reason it runs smooth ??? I have not heard of anyone having spark trouble with a 2.4 radio Why just the aileron ??? I think you should do some more checking

I don't believe the Update will FIX the vibrations. It just makes the firewall and engine box stronger to lessen the EFFECT of the vibrations.

If you have vibrations, you have something out of balance. That's what needs to be fixed

I have not received and update parts yet. I have 30 flights on my Albi and I checked for motor box issues . Looks great so far.

It's not the firewall you have to worry about, it's those pesky Cessna Skymasters!

VG finished repairs Thursday night. Had Balsa USA bring some red solortex to cover lower wing. I had enough blue to complete the job. ODP Dawn Patrol got 4 flights on Friday and 5 on Saturday. I had a chance to fly free style at dinner time Saturday. Wrang that puppy out for 15 min. Talk about a fun airplane. DJ stop by Saturday so we did a couple of formation flight. Great weekend had by all

Default Purchashing the Albatross in near future

I will purchase the BUSA Albatross in the near future and I would like to know which engines current D5/D5a owners are flying? BTW...anyone have a kit of this bird they have decided NOT to build? I am willing to buy an unstarted kit or one that has SOME work done. Let me know on both engine and what's up for sale. Thanks in advance!

Ken I mounted a DA 85 along with Jtech I think its there muffler. BUSA had a special made for the albatros. I've got over 170 flights still flying great.
