Default Georgia DNR Game Warden Carbon Cub Build 50cc

Forthcoming and actually already in motion is a build related to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division. I have already started the plane however it is not to far along. Below are the specifics that will be incorporated into the plane. The plane utilized I have built before.
This year I decided to take a World Models 50cc 120 inch wingspan J3 and attempt a transformation into the Hanger 9 Carbon Cub. The plane turned out very well and I fly it almost every weekend. The power plant I used is a Saito 61cc 4 stroke twin gas. The airframe/engine marriage is perfect. The Georgia DNR Carbon Cub will have a Single cylinder 4 stroke gas 50cc Gaui G-Power.

The colors will be Georgia DNR green and Sheet metal grey. I met with Henson's graphics yesterday in Newnan to fabricate the State of Georgia DNR Law Enforcement Division applications. They are an excellent source for custom graphics. They will be finished next week.

Specifics:
World Models/ Airborne Models 50cc J3
Gaui Gpower 50cc Gas 4 stroke Gas
Power HD 220 oz pull Metal Gear Servos
4 Tenergy 6v Nickel Metal Hydride (2 on ignition, 2 on surfaces)
8 1/2 inch PR Bushwheels
2 inch tundra tailwheel
Futaba electronics set on a Futaba 10 channel transmitter

Default Thursday Night

Tonight I was able to get the Gaui Gpower mounted. Not a difficult task once the standoff distance was determined. The throttle servo is in the belly of the plane. The G power has a nice throttle location but just a different than I was use too. Actually the belly mounted servo is nice because it is away from everything else. Also tonight I was able to prepare for the Carbon Cub 2 tone paint top coat. The top section of the plane will be DNR Game Warden Green. The bottom section of course will be sheet metal. The paint scheme will be identical to the yellow and silver Carbon Cub at the beginning of this thread. Also the wings are finished and have the DNR green on the front wing surface.

The PR Bushwheels utilize a 1/4 bushing. Of course the bushing/axle diameter it is much larger than the gear with the kit. The previous yellow and silver carbon cub has Robart Gear. I decided to use the kit gear on this Carbon Cub. Its very nice and looks scale.

A trick I use if the wheel bushing is larger than the axle you have to work with is to purchase 1/4 brake line from Auto Zone. Cut the length and slip it over the existing axle that comes with the kit. At this point I use to JB Weld the axle into place. It will work loose. My experience has taught me to use glass. Mix a few tablespoons of glass, Tilt the plane and pour the glass into the new axle sleeve. The glass finds every crook and cranny. The sleeve will not come off the axle........period.

Below you will see pictures of the yellow and silver Carbon Cub wings. The DNR I am currently building will resemble it except the colors and the graphics.

Default State DNR Carbon Cub Thursday

Paint for the two tone Carbon Cub scheme is finished. I got very lucky on the line separation. You only get one chance at success or starting over is inevitable. The green/silver line separation had no fade over at all. The landing gear is looking good. I am pleased with the kit gear and not so sure the Robart gear on my other 50cc cub was a waste of money. Nevertheless it is nice to have an example of both.

Next is a hard point mount backing for two antennas. Also the tail wires and windows. More to come.

thanks for looking

Teddy

Default Georgia DNR Carbon Cub Friday

Well the cub is coming together well. Not to long before the graphics will be ready. The PR Bushwheels turned out very nice. The windows are all tinted and in place. The tail wires will be finished tonight. I do not use the kit wire. Hobby Lobby sells the best wire I have ever seen. It is located in the necklace building section of the store. I guess people use wire for neclaces. Anyway the wire comes in all diameters and has plenty of flex and strength.

Two antennas were installed today on the cub. Every DNR boat I have seen has two antennas. So I went with it. Electronics and windscreen are next. Hopefully I will fire the Gaui Gpower 50cc this weekend for the first time. Also the black pin striping will need to be finished before the graphics are applied.

Default Georgia DNR Carbon Cub Saturday

Continuing the build I have just about finished. The windows are in and windscreen looks clean. All electronics have been run utilizing 4 batteries (4 tenergy 6v 2500 Mah), I am old school and will never swap to lipo. I run 2 batteries to surfaces and 2 for fire. A total of 4 independent switches controlled by an external fuselage single switch.

Sunday is first run day for the Gaui Power 50cc. The engine comes stock with a header pipe and a small "muffler". This small muffler did not appear adequate; however when I was on the phone with Alan at Planet Hobby he mentioned a muffler option. The option was a very nice machined muffler that resembles a Saito 150 muffler but larger.

The residual tasks remaining are State DNR graphics, engine run/tune, and cowl paint/fitment. The cub came with a standard J3 cowl; however, I called Airborne Models and ordered a Super Cub Cowl they stock. The Super Cub cowl Airborne Models has is for their Paulistinha ( Brazilian Cub).

Default State DNR Carbon Cub Gaui 50cc 1st Run Sunday

The cub was prepared this morning for first run The Gaui Gpower 50cc requires 20:1 which was perfect since my Saito gas engines run the same. I set the high/low to factory which is 1 1/2 out on both. The choke was not used. I did open the throttle w/o with the ignition off to cycle the prop 8 times.

Upon 1st turn the engine fired immediately and turned the 20x10 prop like it was not even there. After about 1 minute I turned in the low end 1/2 turn and she settled down. The sound of the Gpower is very nice. I have not run the engine with the "small muffler" that comes in the box. As mentioned previously there is a purchase option of a nice machined muffler that resembles a Saito 150 barrel muffler. I will keep the larger muffler on and not bother with the other.

The Gpower has much more power than I anticipated. As with 4 strokes the power is often less than an equal cc 2 stroke. The Gpower prop recommendations are 20x10 and 21x10. There is no doubt a 21x10 will turn with authority. I was gentle with the high rpm range this morning since the engine is new. A few times I ran the RPM up with a tach at the ready. The RPM went to over 6000 without using full throttle. I may even try a 22x8 which would likely turn without stressing the Gpower.

2 weeks ago I pulled a DLE 55 from my Pawnee to replace it with a Saito 61cc twin 4 stroke. The 61cc twins are out of stock until next month. After observing the power and craftsmanship of the Gpower I am now considering the Gpower 50cc for the Pawnee rather than the Saito 61 twin.

Maiden will hopefully be Saturday the 26th. Once the graphics are finished in a few days I will post the final build pictures.

Default DNR Carbon Cub 50cc Wednesday

Greetings, The cub is moving towards completion. The majority of the graphics have been applied except for the cowl. I ordered a Super Cub Cowl which will not arrive until tomorrow. The maiden is scheduled for Saturday the 26th in Senoia Georgia ( Home of the Walking Dead Film Series) Hopefully the maiden will go well. I am fortunate to already have this model and know some tricks with a very good CG point. The Gaui 50cc has impressed me and I ordered another one for my Pawnee which was previously powered by a DLE 55. The DLE 55 was a very good engine; however, I wanted the 4 stroke sound and silky smooth power.

The final posting beyond today will be field photos and a report on the maiden. Hopefully the report will not be a Coroner's Report of fatal wounds.

Fly Safe,
Teddy

Default Georgia DNR Carbon Cub Thursday 8/24/17

The Super Cub cowl came in. Cutting around the Gpower 50cc was not bad at all. I have pulled more hair out on others. After cutting and fitment I prepared for paint. Alcohol wipe the cowl down and let it dry well. A light primer for first. Later 3 cast over coats of green. 2 hours later 2 coats of clear enamel. That is it.

Before placing the cowl on the cub I take black fuel tubing and split it with a razor. I use it to outline the cut out of the cowl and it gives it a very clean look and edge. As you place the tubing around your cut out use CA thin to hold it in place. CA holds fuel tubing to plastic cowls very well. I have a picture below of the cowl cut out edge underneath the engine. I am sure better tricks are out there but this seems to work very nice.

The wings were place onto the plane for a final check of the CG. I have some removable weight on top of the stand offs. The plane tilts at about 35 degrees so likely I will be able to pull some of the weight. But for now a bit snout heavy is ok with me until she comes back in safely and the Coroner isn't called.

Maiden is Saturday unless Kim fires on Guam and our gloves come off

Nice, does your DNR actually have a Cub? Most of my career was with Cal. DFG now Fish and Wildlife. We had two Cessna 185's, STOL, now long houred out! I have a H-9 Valiant that I have been tempted to recover as it closely resembles the 185, in looks and performance.

Gizmo,

They do not have a cub; however, they are in the process of acquiring a Fox Bat which is a STOL. Other states have utilized Cubs and Cessna. It is Likely that some planes were used that I am unaware of.

Valiant ? Re cover or paint it. Go for it. I choose to paint for 2 reasons. The covering from Airborne Models is outstanding and I did not want to remove it. Second, The paint style I use is casting not direct. So the product feels and looks like fabric.

My next adventure is probably a Cessna 50cc from Airborne Models with a Gaui Gpower 50cc. Decorated in a Game Warden theme. Maybe one of the Northern States. Maybe a 60cc twin Saito twin if I feel the Gpower would not be enough thrust. I will need to research a little further on weight.

I am going to re-maiden a pawnee tomorrow that is the same size as Airborne's Cessna. 108 inch wingspan so the weight of the two compared is probably close. The re maiden of the Pawnee will have a Gaui Gpower 50cc. We will see how it goes.

Gizmo,

Previously you complimented my plane and I overlooked saying thank you. Thank You !

Large job for a valiant ? Not to bad at all except your plane is already assembled. I know the Valiant and it's an excellent plane. Heck you can fly it every way possible. Trainer, scale or huckin.

Back to "large job".....The DNR Carbon Cub is 120 inch wingspan with two colors. It is not bad to paint.....the work is taping off. It is much easier if you start from a new plane in the box. You can paint each piece and get all those tight spots that are elusive. So you are correct to say painting a plane that is in fly ready condition would be a task.

I hope your project finds success. Send me a PM if you need any help in any way.

Teddy

Default Maiden day

Well she is home in one piece. Of all the maidens in my past this one was a cream puff. I taxied around the strip a little this morning. After feeling the plane out I gave it enough power to have the tail lift. The tail came up way to easy so I knew some of my removable weight could be discarded. After removing 5 ounces I gave her the power and away she went. No trim was necessary. I kept waiting for a dip to the left or right for trim and she never needed it. The elevator was just right.

First report on the Gaui Gpower is sensational. I am very pleased with the power. Also the responsiveness of the high and low to tweeking is excellent. This morning prior to maiden she sounded a bit fat in transition from low to high. I gave her about 1/8 of a turn lean and that was it . Total flights of the day were 6 and I never needed another adjustment with the Gpower. The sound ? Pure clean 4 stroke.

I re maidened the Pawnee as well which was reborn with a Gaui Gpower 50cc as well. Previously I had a DLE 55 which was replaced with the Gpower. End result ? I would do it all over again. The Gaui is a great engine.

Putting the DNR Carbon Cub together from a J3 was a great experience. Hopefully she will give me 100's of flights.

Thanks for looking,

Teddy
