Smile Muffler installation on 1/6 scale Curtiss P-6E Hawk

Hi guys!
So I'm stuck on the installation of the muffler on my P6E Hawk. The problem is that when screwed on the engine, the muffler would be right on the "wall" of the fuselage. Since it's a scale model, I'd prefer if the muffler would be out of sight as to not ruin the looks.
I have to say that I'm not a very experienced builder and this is actually my first model with an engine. So I really don't have many ideas as to what can and can't be done on the engine.
However, the idea that came to my mind was to shorten the muffler's "arm" and try to fit it inside the fuselage. I'd attach a tube or pipe or something at the end of the muffler and have it pop out somewhere else.
I also thought of trying to adapt a tube to connect the exhaust of the engine to the little tubes on the side of the plane and using them as the muffler. (As it would be on the real size plane)
Can any one help me with this? Are any of my ideas possible or would they interfere in the working of the engine and the muffler?
Thanks ahead!
(these are the photos of the situation haha).

Depending on the brand of engine, you may be able to buy an after market pitts-style muffler that will fit better. Try SlimlineProducts.com, BennettBuilt.com, or JTECRC.com.
