Er....16oz is just fine. I..um...actually...er....sort of....huh....left my throttle linkage (ballmount) a little loose one day......had a really good half hour flight at 1/3 throttle though

Actually, standard servos will work fine for this plane, someone did the numbers for the speeds this plane flys and the size of the control surfaces. Unless you are doing a power dive, etc they will be fine. I do have two elevator servos (I did all Sullivan pushrods). Any servo's with more Torque than the standard servos will do you fine, including the ones mentioned above. Both VG and Brian (BHole, many Brian we really need to discuss your nickname someday) have great advice. Brian, once again, I had a great time flying with you and Dean this year and I look forward to next fall.

Yes, the DuBo are brown. The Sullivan stoppers (white and black) are a bad idea, neither works.

Prop Nut....Do you have part numbers or info for the pushrods you are using? BUSA's site says you will need 'gold n rods' and 'gold n cable'. I figure the rods are the push rods, but what is the gold n cable for. Hopefully this is not too dumb of a question.

Actually, I am using a 33cc Homelite Chainsaw conversion motor on my DVII these days. The FourStroke Briggs and Stratton is on my Fokker DVIII now. Some Weedies are better than others.

I like to use the Golden rod cable for my throttles. On a gasser though you need to use a plastic clevis to eliminate engine noise. Sullivan makes many pushrod products and I feel their clevis is superior to any other on the market. Any of the rod in tube varieties will probably work well.

Dave, is that a 1/4 or 1/3 D-VIII. Hammer has a 1/3 with a fox 80 I believe. Plenty of power.

The 32oz. tank will allow gas to swash around if you don't fill it. That's a lot of gas. I use Kaven 20 or 24oz tanks. You can get them from Sig MFG. 16 oz. should be fine however.

Excellent news from BALSA USA. I asked them to fess up and disclose what was coming down the pipeline, and I got the following answer (that is all they answered, did not even give a name):

<<40 Size Nieuport 17. Then a 1/3 scale Albatross.>>

That is all they said. I e-mailed back asking for approximate release dates. The Albatross will be a winner:-)

Wow, non less than 5! I'm joining on the wait! I just loved the one they have at the museum in Seattle (one of my favorite museums)... With 5 1/3 scale Albatri taking to the sky at the same time, you will not be able to see the sun...

That is so cool! I really could not handle a 1\3 scale though. But maybe a 1\4 will be coming up shortly behind it. I just love BUSA with what they provide us with. With so few kit options available it is nice to see more coming from them.

Why don't you try doing the pull-pull control system on your rudder at first? It is the easiest to do and once you see how easy and accurate it is I think you may become a convert.I haven't used Gold-n-rod since the early 80's,due to its propensity to expand and contract with the temperature.

Thanks for the advice. I will have to see how well the rest of the build goes getting to that point. Hopefully I will feel good enough about my skills to go that route. I have been fighting this stupid cold for about a week now. Mix that with all of the panic of the holiday season (gift getting, gatherings, etc....) and I have not had much time to think about my DVII that is currently trapped in that oppressive looking box of balsa wood in the basement.

My next step is to get the 'hobby table' cleared off and get the area ready to build. I don't think the base table will be a problem as it is very sturdy and has a flat level surface. I tried to recall how I built the Aerostar previously but it has been way too long ago. I am trying to figure out what to do for a base for the pins to go into. I have a couple large sheets of styrofoam about 3/4" thick and maybe 5'X3' each. Would that work to lay the plans over and the pins to stick in? Secondly, do people still use wax paper to put over the plans? I have heard of people using glass but I would like to see how this build goes to see if I have any more large scale planes in my future to invest in a big sheet of glass.

Do you guys have any links to some good basic building tips threads with some basics on pinning the pieces, gluing (if using non-CA glues) and such ?

P.S. I just can’t wait to unwrap the G38 and DX7 Santa is bringing.

I used to have a closet in my office with a sliding door (plywood). When I needed the board to build, I did take the door out to the shop, and used the back of it for the building. Being plywood, you could press pins in it w/o problems.

When we moved to the new hose, I went to Home Depot and purchased a door panel. Well, apparently they do not do them anymore of wood. It is of a composite material "sheeted" with wood. To make a long story short, i cannot press pins into this panel. I will have to keep looking or, sheet this door with plywood... I do cover the bluprints with wax paper, and it works great. Since I use pins, ang glass and pins do not mix, I do not use glass. Remember, the surface you build on HAS to be flat, and big enough for your top wing (the biggest part of your bird). I set the parts on the board with pins. In othe words 1st the board, then the blueprint, then the wax paper, and I build on that. I am curious to hear from the rest of the people to see if there is a better way... Sometimes I glue home made wood jigs to the door w/CA. Like when you are working on the fues and you join the sides of a fuse together, and you want the sides to be perpendicular. Once finished, I just rip the jig of the door, and lightly sand the area and voilá. Once the building was done, the door went back to the closet! Yes, the door looked surface like crap, but it was the side that you do not see, the other side was stained:-)
