BUSA Fokker DVII

Propnut,
Keep checking on E-bay, the 40cc weedwhackers seem to keep getting cheaper and cheaper. My used 40cc actually turns 100-200 rpm higher than my new one, so I wouldn't be shy about getting a used one(as long as it's not trashed). In regards to my conversation with Proctor, they said their engines were turning a 20x10 @6500 while I am turning a 20x8 @ 6300.

I forgot to give "props" to vertical grimmace. That is one fine-looking DVII! Your exhaust looks awesome and of course the lozenge fabric is to die for. I have some GTM fabric but I am a slow builder so it will be a while before I get around to using it.

Thanks jtich. I think there are some tricks to using the fabric. I used wax on my rear spars but my fabric still stuck to them in places. I used a small straight pin to get it unstuck and it looks fine now. The biggest problem was the weather was too cold for the dope to dry fast enough. You really need to have it warm outside to dope properly. Unless you have a heated shop but the smell is really hard to deal with.
I also had a hard time finding rib tapes. I would either use Glenn's losenge tapes or maybe he will offer some in the plain white linen and then you can dye them. I used some ribbon from a fabric store and it 100% polyester. This not only did not take the dye well, but it also did not stick down the way I would have liked.

This thread may be considered dead but i wanted to report on my maiden flight. With the G38 she flew wonderfully. I shimmed the rear struts with G10 fiberglass 1\8" to remove some positive incidence in the wing. I had it set up as per the plans. This worked great and required minimal downtrim for level flight. She does want to skid in the turns requiring rudder input but otherwise she flew great. Very easy to keep straight on take off and for landing I just got her over the runway and chopped power to idle. She just set down nice and easy.
I did have to add 2.5lbs of lead up front though to get the balance right at the 5" mark. She really did not seem to mind the weight. This puts the total to 24.5 lbs.

I had some pictures taken and will post them. I have to wait for them to be e-mailed from a fellow pilot. Video might be a little tough, but I will see what I can do. The most fantastic thing about my DVII is how good it looks in the air. I swear I now know what the full scale would look like. After all of that work and research it is so satisfying to actually see her in the air. Can you believe a guy at the field asked me "is that an ARF"! That is such a typical response anymore though that it was not really all that insulting.
Good luck Lazyace. One more thing to remember, this plane flies really kind of slow. I was surprised though at first that I even had enough power to get off of the ground but I now feel the G-38 is perfect. With the way mine is rigged right now, at low throttle settings she drops. At higher throttle settings she climbs. So if I need to gain altitude I just power up. I think I like this way. Sort of like a properly trimmed trainer. I have only had the one flight but I cannot wait to get back out there. I really do love the way the BUSA aircraft fly. That is the reason I chose this kit in the first place. Now my DR1 will not feel so alone on the flight line!

I am wondering, could some of you guys who have been flying yours for a while now tell me where your aileron throws came to? I have mine set as per the plans with 1.25" up and .5" down. I think I want to increase the amount of down travel to try to attempt a roll. It would be extremely slow right now. Here are some more pics with my new aces of iron pilot. He is removable.

I'll be there Tursday afternoon. We're leaving Wednesday and staying over night in St. Louis, probably won't be able to drive after touring the Busch Brewery! LOL!

Well, I need to revise my weight figures. It seems I did not calculate correctly and I am considerably lighter than I thought. I thought I was at 24.5 lbs. Last night I put the fuse on my digital scale and then weighing the other 2 wings seperately, The total came out to 18lbs. 14 oz. The reason why I post this is that this weight is very reasonable and I would actually consider it light. This was using The Torrence fabric on the entire plane. Also I added 2.5lbs. of nose weight! So it is possible to add scale detail without a ton of weight to this kit.

Oh, also to anyone else building this plane. I increased the travel of down aileron to probably 1". I have now done a roll and it does not skid any worse in the turns than it did before. I actually think it handles better. I may remove all of the differential. If I need to I will just fly the Rudder.
Another thing I have learned about gassers, The fuel vapors expand more than glow fuel. I have found out the hard way that you do not want to plug the vent when storing or transporting your plane. The pressure inside the tank will blow the stopper right out!
Anyone know a good way to remove gasoline stains from fabric? Maybe K2R spot remover. This is just one more in a long list of things I have learned about gas engines.

Hi to all 1/4 DVII builders,
Should the Laser 200V be a good candidate for a BUSA DVII?
widest point is 15cm, does this fit inside the cowl/fuse completely?
I'm currently flying this engine in a Mick Reeves Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter, it weighs 7 kg and has power to spare
(18x8" master airscrew)
wondering if it would be sufficient on a 8-10kg plane?
Thanks, Ralf

Hello David, thanks for your reply
Good to hear It should fit in the fuselage
Now I can start on planning
I haven't measured the rpm on the Laser with 18x8", shall try soon
Thanks, Ralf
