sfsjkid,
Any progress to report? This thread goes quiet at times.
I have closed a deal on a DCU BD-5J near finished Kit. Basically it is the same as Jetset's Jetmart BD-5J Turbine posted earlier in this thread. It is on it's way here via Fedex due to arrive at my doorstep the 14th. The DCU line of kits was purchase by Jetmart who produced the Bd-5J for a while but now only offers custom built models it seems. I plan to make an EDF conversion to it.

Hey Joe,
I agree the thread does go quiet at times, very quiet. Unfortunately when it is, that means I haven't made any progress. The search for a metal supplier kinda got halted with the flying season, haven't even touched raw balsa since my last post. I'm excited about your purchase though, looking forward to hearing more about your new bird!
Frank
I'll post any updates if there is any progress

Hey Robert,
As you've found out the new KB40 is a different animal, more details here,
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=5601096
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=5652255
I was able to buy the new parts from Meccoa, http://www.mecoa.com/. It wasn't listed on their website but found they still had the parts when I contacted them. In the parts diagram, it doesn't show the split retaining pin which I feel is required, let me know if you can't figure that out.
As for the retracts I got them from Sheldon's, they might have some left in a back room? Otherwise eBay or flea markets?

Good luck and good to hear someone else is making a BD5 also! Keep us updated!

sfskid or anyone;
A master machinest advises not to make shaft adapter out of "ledloy A steel, it''s lead content makes an unreliable weld to stainless steel (use mild steel). Is this (proven) true?

Frank had any new progress on the BD5? If you haven't found the tubing for the
drive shaft as of yet try looking at chrome molly it is available from Aircraft Spruce: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalo...tubing_un1.php
or the stainless tubing: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalo...lesstubing.php
Just came across this thread, have been interested in the Palmer BD-5 for some time....still considering the glow version?

Hi Bill,
Funny you should mention Aircraft Spruce, for I did just discover them recently. As for progress, I finally did get some 12L14 steel and started playing around with that (I usually work with aluminum). I did begin work on the prop shaft ends but quickly realized that I should have the prop shaft (duh!
. Yes, still considering the glow version. Apologies for the slow progress, I just generally work on it as I have the urge.
Thanks!

Sorry, no new news other than I put the 4th plan sheet up on my wall to remind me of the ten year project. Guess I'm the only one who's trying to "build" huh?

Here are 2 other BD-5's that I've "found". A foamy edf and a turbine model
Foamy info here, supposedly a 90mm EDF fiberglass version is in the works
http://www.windrider.com.hk/
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...=947404&pp=100
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=987626
The turbine (this is the production version of the BD5 mentioned back in post 65, I've also added a pic of the one mentioned in post 67 just to have a picture of it on RCG in case the link disappears.)
http://www.skymasterjet.com/bd5.htm
Finally, with the passing of Dan Palmer, his plans are now available through
http://www.precisioncutkits.com/palmer.htm
As for my project, it will be on hold for a bit more as I clear the workbench of other projects. I've promised myself not to buy any more stuff until I do, so maybe the BD5 will have my full attention in a year or so.

I have a Goldberg nose retract that is in my parts box, never used. PM me if your interested. Nice project here I almost bought a kit way back when Jim Bede started selling them. Glad I did not, built a full scale KR2 instead.
I am now finishing up a giant scale BD8 and using enough balsa to build a small house.

Gentlemen,
quite a while ago I found the two drawings as shown in thread 2 of this article and have spent quite a bit of time trying to find info regarding the bigger BD-5.
Finally I found this forum and this article, and most importantly the link to obtain a copy of the plans.
I have now ordered the BD-5D (Prop Pusher Ver.)(64.25”) Plan Set.
Might I ask you that have started/are building/ have finished building this aircraft model if you will allow me to contact you as I build and when I need information or assistance.
Kindest regards
John.m
