If you can't find correct scale decal/stick-on letters and numbers for the N-number on the wings, you are faced with masking and painting them on. Balsa USA produces a 1/3rd cub, I should think the could supply the numbers. I would mask and paint the lighning bolt, as most decals I have seen for this are not done correctly.

RE: lightning bolts and wing numbers on j3 1/3 scale cub?
Hi,
Someone sent me this graphic some time ago. I used the info when I finished a Cub and it came out fine. I made up templates for the NC Numbers and the front section of the lightning bolt, masked them out and shot the black.
Hope this helps .

I used a similar (but not so detailed drawing for my cub. A lot of cubs, including full scale rebuilds get that lightning bolt wrong, and it really sticks out in a bad way....

I read somewhere that the lightning bolts on the full-scale cub were masked & painted by hand at the factory and varied in size and shape sometimes significantly from cub to cub. If that's true, it would seem to me that it would work just fine to make an approximation from photos of the particular plane you're trying to reproduce.
As far as the id numbers, you might think about vinyl graphics from somebody like Bill Fulmer (customcutgrafix.com). You just need to give him the lettering and the dimensions and your set to go.
And be sure to post your solution. Include photos!

You can contact Bill Fulmer at Customcutgrafix.com and he can fix you up. Just tell him you have a 1/3 scale J3 cub and want the lighting bolt and N-numbers. He has the correct font and size for the N-numbers. On my 1/3 scale cub I used his N-numbers and painted the lighting bolt. The only reason I painted the lighting bolt is becasue I didn't know Bill already had the artwork on hand for that.

Alas, I have to second the opinion that there is a wide variation in Cub 'decor' these days.
I have four different sets of docs for J-3s, and all of them depict the lightning bolt in the same general vicinity, but with obvious marked differences.
Best bet is to snag a set of photos for a specific Cub and mimic it.
