Wheels
pantherflyr,
The main wheels I'm using are Robarts. I had to have some skinny enough to fit inside the wing. I recessed the gear so flush gear doors could be installed. The nose wheel is a Du-Bro. I made aluminum covers for all of them to try to look more scale. I haven't posted any progress pictures in a while because there hasn't been any progress. I've been busy with other priorities. Hope to get back going soon.

engine selection
i am going batty trying to get an in cowl alternative to my saito 100. I was thinking of using an rcv 90 or 120, but am wooried about gnd clearance on the prop. Then i was looking at a rcv 140 because it is 3.5 inches from the thrustline to the top of the head. There is about 3.8 or 9 to the cowl, so i belioeve this should work. Its either that or the os 1.08, eeeech dont want a 2 stroke, but maybe it sounds a lil better b/c of the displacement. Let me know please if you have any suggestions. Thanks in advance. Nick

Here is a pic of mine from joe nall that fly4fun took of it while there(thanks).mine has the robarts in it,cockpit kit, covered in ultracote with an asp 1.20 for power.Overall this was a great plane to build and it flys very well,it has the same type of tail wag as my corsair in windy situations.I'm hoping that as the ASP breaks in it will put out more power, because right now it has quite a long takeoff run,but once flying does well.

RE: Top-Flite T-34
I'm finally back to work on the T-34. I finished welding up my in-cowl muffler today. Now I need to run it on the test stand and see how it tachs and sounds compared to the stock muffler. The shinny tube on the bench in the first photo is one of the stainless tubes where the exhaust will exit from the scale location.

js,
I just made a can that would fit in the alloted space. I ran the engine today to check it out. It tachs 10,200 with the stock muffler and 9,800 with the one I built. The one I built was also a lot quieter.

RE: Top-Flite <span class=
Hey all, great thread! This has been a fascinating read. I'm fairly new to flying, still flying my 1st plane (a WorldStar 40). Great trainer, especially with the semi-symmetrical airfoils and the lack of dihedral, so I can do some basic pattern aerobatics, but I'm now looking for a low-wing aircraft to help me transition into a cap 232 or an extra 330 or something as my third plane for full aerobatics.
Would the T-34 be an appropriate plane for me? Will it be able to perform aerobatics well enough that I could then go to a more hardcore aerobat afterwords?
Also, since I have no real building experience, I'm looking at an ARF, and I was wondering if the Hangar 9 T-34 ARF is a decent plane, and what you all think of its "semi-scale" looks? Does it look horrible, or is it acceptable, for an ARF?

The hanger 9 T-34 looks good and has a pretty good scale appearence. I put one togrther with retracks and put an OS 25FX in front. It weighed 7 Lbs. and the 46FX pulled it around ok. With a high wing loaded the plane flies much faster than scale. I think it is a good ARF.

I'm finally back working on my T-34. I've got the flaps and ailerons fit and hinged. Also got the servo hatches in the bottom of the wing. Ready to glue the three wing sections together.

RE: Top-Flite <span class=
PT21,
I'd like to see the gear doors too. Mine's going to be full-house and covered in Flight-Metal so I'm trying to keep everything as smooth as possible (gear doors etc). I did the scale hinge modification to the tail section and will do the same when I get to the ailerons. I've just started framing up the left wing panel on mine and have a couple of questions:
*When do you run the wingtip lights, before the top sheeting goes on?
*How deep do you inset the retracts so that the door mount flush. Into the rails or into the ribs.
*How did you attatch the doors to the legs, what's the mechanism for the inner doors.
*What sized servos are you using?
Great thread,
Chris

RE: Top-Flite <span class=
I used two servos mounted in the wing center section that were attached to two pushrods that open/close the inner gear doors. I used Bob Violett's offset hinges on the doors and a Jomar door sequencer to open the doors and close them after the main gear were retracted or extended. The outer doors on mine are spring loaded closed and are opened by the main gear struts.

In answer to the above questions:
I'm not installing lights.
The retracts are recessed 1/8" into the rails ( I routed them with a milling machine).
The outboard doors are linked to the gear legs with a nylon link. The inboard doors are actuated through a bellcrank by an air cylinder. I'm using a sequencing valve from Ultra Precision in Canada.
I'm using all standard ball bearing Airtronics servos (50 oz./in.).

Hey pt, its about time you posted again, ive been waiting to see it. Progress on mine has been slow due to my f-9 pnather and getting it ready to fly at a jet rally. Well i am back to it and i have questions regarding the main gear doors, i have mine routed out what looks like 1/8 or a lil more and it doesnt seem like the door is going to sit flush with the skin? This is irking me because i though i got the measurements right before i skinned the bottom of the wing!! Any ideas on how to take a lil more off the mounts with the wing skinned already? Thanks, nick

PT21flyer...I have been following you in this thread and I must say you are impressive. Guys like me appreciate the detail that you go into but, more so, taking the time to share it !!!
Pantherflyr.....your pictures are great. You mentioned a fiberglass cowl....where did you get it?? I have just started the T/F 34B and really didn't like the way the enclosed plastic cowl looked. It is my first attempt at this type and size of plane. Will be sanding the elvevator and stab tips tomorrow cuz I'm flying indoor stuff tonight. Thanks and I appreciate your reply, Tom

Pantherflyr,
You're T-34 looks great. I like the color scheme you've chosen. It's different from everything else. The way your engine is mounted it looks like it would be real easy to add the scale exhaust stacks and just run you flex pipe into the left one. Just a suggestion.

RE: Top-Flite T34
I have built a baggage door on the side of my T34. Inside I have mounted the radio ON/OFF sw, the running lights ON/OFF sw, the retract air tank fill valve, and the air tank pressure guage.

RE: Top-Flite T34
Hal,
I'm planning on doing the same thing on my T-34. I'm going to put a miniature jack on the left groung lug at the front of the wing to light the glow plug. The remote needle valve and fuel vent and fill lines will be in the nose wheel well so everything is hidden.

Hey pt....thanks for the comments on my install. That idea with the augmentor tubes is exactly what im going to do! Mindreader. Anyways, damn whoevers that aircraft is is awesome!!!!! The baggage idea was another of mine that i was going to do. I am also cutting the scale engine access panels on the cowl to get to all the engine crap. Gotta question, the cowl sits flush with the fuse right????? it doesnt overlap right??????if so i am going to have to remedy that! Oh and one more thing, can you chiime in on my question about the main wheel doors,im a lil flustered at the fact that it seem they will sit to high, even though i recessed them! I am doing that paint scheme by the way, b/c i am active duty AF and cant have it any other way ;-) Tall to ya later, nick
