Good News!

Some time back I sent many many photos of the T-28 cockpit to Brian Burcar at Dynamic Balsa for the purpose of developing a cockpit kit. I received an email from them yesterday saying the kit is finished and they are now writing the instructions. The kist should be available in 2 to 3 weeks. 1/6th scale.

Well everyone, we just finished the Mid States Scale Classic and Scale Masters qualifier here in Kansas. T28 took high static and the couple of flights I got in went very well until I forgot about the all inportant flair on landing. Was consentrating on the cross wind so much I flaired a little late. Did alittle damage to the undercarriage, knocked out the left main, but just took out the two center ribs that the gear was mounted to. wont be a verry difficult fix at all. No damage to mechanics etc. Should have flying in a couple of weeks if I can get a couple of friends projects out of the way. Congrats to YAT on the good showing at the Nats.

Well, sorry no inflight pics as we video'd the flites and no stills.

Any how, this is one as we taxied to take flight at the Nats as taken by a Nats worker.

She flies great. I sent the gear and exhuast back to get a few little quirks fixed!

Also a shot of my pilot Greg and other pilot Greg from Las Vegas.

YAT, The plan is to get the first kit going late fall, see how it goes together etc. Won't be many changes to the kit as it flys very good. However we have looked at areas we can reduce weight without sacaficing any structrual. Hoping to take 5# out of the total. Would like to get it to the low 30#. Need to talk to Robart or some one regarding mods to the main landing gear. Wheels and brakes are anther issue, need a narrow wheel/brake combo. At the present weight it should have brakes for landing, with a little power on at touchdown, you need quite a bit of roll out length and this is on short grass, have not flown off pavement as of yet. I'm hoping to post some pics of the dash panels soon, they will be offered as an option. (really something.)

Been pretty busy with work and such. All repairs are done with the exception on touching up the paint. I get some more experience flying the T28 and do the paint stuff this spring. Anyway here are a couple of pics of the partically complete forward dash panel. My god friend Walt got alittle carried away when doing the laser cutting, he went ahead and went a couple of extra steps to make this instruments very life like. We will offer these panels as an option to the kit..
thanks all

Haven't posted any new info for sometime, Getting canopies pulled for the kit, see how everything will work out. Fiberglass specialities will have to make a slight modification to the cowling for the production kits. I have all the repairs done that accured on my brain fart landing. So we are ready to go come flying season.
More info on the kit to come.

You will all be happy to know the first kit has been cut. Will start laying up as soon as plans come back form having them printed, should be this week. Man are there alot of parts. Walt and I have tried to make this the most complete laser kit out there. The only items you will need to build are sheet balsa, spruce strings, balsa stringers. Canopy frames all laser cut, all the hinge lines and radius, cowl mounting ring etc. Still waiting on my canopy mold to get done the third time. Will offer with two full sized plan sheets along with a template sheet should you want to cut your own,(I don't think this will be very popular as there is just a ton of parts) and instruction manual. Need to talk to gear manufacture for scale gear. You could use the Robart T28 gear designed for the Iron Bay, but some of the angles are not to scale and you would have make some very minor changes to the wheel well openings. If you ue the Iron Bay gear have Eric sell you a set of their P47 85degree rotation blocks. I'll explain this in the instruction manual.
Kit will include:
Complete laser cut formers, ribs speciality items
Canopy
Cowl
Rolled Plans
Instruction booklet, which will include a how to on making gear doors & hatch covers, recommend engine,
Hopfully will have build pics in the very near future.
thanks for staying tuned

Johnny this is just too awsome. How about a link to the vender. I am an ex-crew chief of a T-28D deployed in SE Asia. I have been looking for "my" kit. I think this is it.

Ron, thanks for the kind words, I am the vendor and will be marketing the kit, I hope very soon, still waiting on the cad drawn plans to come back from the printer. The first kit has been cut and we will do a "quik build" to make sure everything goes together precisely. Will enclude the cowl and canopy. Should not take very long to get it to the bones, from there it is sheeting and detailing, and everyone has their preference on that.
I will put you on " keep informed list"
thanks again

Kind of fitting. I just read this thread from the start and the add at the bottom of the last page was for the Parkzone T-28. I have this little plane and it is so fun to fly. I am currently looking at the BH .60 size model offered by HobbyPeople. Beauty planes guys, loved the read.

Hey Johnny, Brent here from Shawnee Mission Park. Saw you at our fun fly and thought I'd take you up on your paint help with my texan. I think we're all ready for shooting. I tried to call you a couple of times but don't want to be a thorn in your side. Give me a shout. I thought your thread needed a bump. I'm sure everyone cant wait for your kit to become available.

Default RE: T-28 True 1/5 Scale

My appologies to everyone on the delay of the kit and build follow on. I have redesigned the airfoil to a more user friendly one. The origional airfoil is scale and fully symetrical, this does not lend itself will to scaled downed aircraft. You had to be right on the money with airspeed, decent etc in order to achieve a smooth touchdown. I discussed with Nick Zeroli and he suggested a 2412 airfoil which he uses on alot of their kits. Everything is at the laser, just waiting on the new ribs.
I want this to be a joy to fly for the average flyer. Just need to get a little more lift at a lower airspeed.
Bret, give me a call regarding the paint.

Hey John, Thought I'd give you an idea of paint. Found this picture of an old post that I really like..... plus it looks like it might be pretty close to the color of your gorgeous plane. Anyway, I'll give you a shout. see ya'. Brent I don't know why it wouldn't let me load the immage but here's the link.

Well here we go. Picked up the new wing ribs etc for the 2412 airfoil. Here are pics of the wing build. to this point it has went very well and has been fairly quick. Probalby have about 7 hrs of actuall build time.
The first thing to do is laminating the forward and rear spars, along with the redesigned retract mounts. The forward spars are 48" long and are 1/4 x 1/2 spruce with a additional 1/4 x 1/2 spruce doubler through the landing gear area. The rear spars only run through the landing gear area.
The ribs that retain the landing gear are a three layer laminate of 1/8 ply that are slotted to recive the mounting plate. (This mounting design may need to change depending on gear manufacture, right now it is Robart)
These steps were done using West System epoxy, so i had to let dry over night.
