AMM Super Decathlon

Found a Super Decathlon model, by American Model Manufacturing, partial built - all parts are there. Glass fuselage & Cowl and foam wings with built up rib caps and LE and TE sheeting to look like open bay wing. Model is gorgeous and looks like it will fly well with a 91 4-stroke. WS is (I think) 84". Anyone ever heard or seen this model fly? I don't think they are still in business
Fuselage and cowl are complete and ready to paint. Fuse has working entry door to access radio and wing tubes. Wings need to be sheeted and aluminum tube spars added (they are plug-in wing halves). I have a NIB OS 91 Surpass I am thinking of using - but cannot figure how to get the muffler out of the cowl without destroying the looks. Anyone know of a flexible exhaust manifold for it?

The kit your referring to was sold back in the mid to late 90's. I believe they were based out of Mason, Michigan, just north of me.
You have a couple options for your muffler. You can run your engine inverted and buy a slimline pitts style muffler. Mount the engine horizontally and mount with a slimline muffler for that arrangment.
Also check out www.keleo-creations.com they make really nice stuff.
Do you think a 91 4-c will be enought engine for a 84" model?

Yes, I think so. The original documentation says it will fly with a strong .60 2 cycle. I think the weight will be in the 10 pound range max, so I should be ok.
I already decided to mount the engine inverted to avoid having the cylinder stick out - the cowl completely covers the engine when inverted, and the intake cooling holes on either side of the prop look adequate give the exit behind the cowl is large also.
I will look at the pitts style muffler - thanks. Have you ever seen one of these AMM models? The glass work and craftsmanship is beautiful - wonder why they went out of business?

Yes, the AMM guys would come to the local swap meets. I was a novice pilot and builder at the time, I almost bought one. I would guess they either could make enough kits to justify the effort to make them or not able enough to distribute effective.
Let's see some pictures! I love Decathlons!

Hello, I am the guy who manufactured the AMM Super Decathlon. The kit was shelved in the late 90's for some other projects and then the tooling was lost in a fire. I would love to hear from anyone who has one of my kits. I would also be very interested in purchasing one to use for retooling so I can start up the company again. Thanks Mike
