Default Bob Rich L-19 Bird Dog anyone?

I bought this plane essentially finished from a buddy who bought it from the builder, said it was built from plans. I believe it to be a Bob Rich RCM #1189 plan set. Has a 6' wing span, operating flaps, fiberglass cowl. It's drilled for the motor mounts, but doesn't appear to have had an engine mounted. Certainly never flew since the wing doesn't fit the fuse-needs to be trimmed. Trying to find out what engine/motor mount may have been called for in the plans. I have an ST .61 2s that looks like it will squeeze in with the right muffler. Any help on this one? Bill S.

Except for the location of the wing hold down block, that closely resembels the Jack Stafford L-19. It is a 60 size plane as well. I have mounted an OS 91 4 cycle on mine and there is plenty of room in the cowl. My wing is also about 6 ft long and I have built in the flaps as well. I am just finishing the wing as we speak and hope to have her finished in a month or so. Good Luck, Dave

These are pics of the wing and tail feathers. Guy did an excellent job of building, and covering! Needs a few of my personal touches such as lettering. In the background is my rebuild P-40, my F4D Skyray and the Ziroli Stuka wing-I think I suffer from a plane addiction!

WS-I am building the Stafford L-19 and on the plans they credit Bob Rich with the design-his original model was published in RCM. Your ST 61 should fly the plane ok-I am using a Saito 91S, but I talked to a modeler who flew his with a Saito 72. The plane should come in around 8 # AUW,depending on how many scale details you add. The new Stafford design calls for 2 servos on Ailerons and 2 for the flaps, so mine may weigh a little more. I have not seen that color scheme, gray and red, currently planning on doing mine in the Army red/white scheme, with rockets of course. (non-functional)
Does yours have the windows in the top of the wing?
I didn't like the wing bolts going thru the windows, so I am currently trying to work around that little detail.

WS-also meant to ask how your builder handled the corrugations on ailerons, flaps, elevator and rudder. Still pondering how to get that effect. Any ideas??

I'll study the corrugations and try to get a closeup shot. He has the top windows (wing) faked with aluminum tape. It has 4 servos in the wing. If your interested, this is something I came up with to build a Ford Tri-motor:

It looks like he used something like angle stock, maybe basswood like model railroaders use. Appears he covered the surfaces first, then applied the pre-painted corrugations individually. Man, I don't have that kind of patience! Must add up to a couple hundred! I'm not happy with the servos mounted up high, sort of Cub-like. That big cockpit area cries out for a full scale pilot-and cool instrument panel too! Where do these Stafford plans come from?

I was thinking on 1/6 scale the corrugations would not be quite that tall-in Bob Rich's write up on his model, he used string ca'ed to the control surface-just hate to try that technique. Guess I need to see how big the plastic corrugations are in a Cessna 182 kit. Thanks for the pic-looks like you have a well built Bird dog-the Stafford plans are from the Jack Stafford Scale Kit Company-they make several WB kits. The Bird Dog kit has been "redesigned" so I don't know how it would vary from the RCM plans that are available.
I have some pics of the model that Bob Rich published in RCM if you would like them, along with the article-they were sent to me by another builder. PM me your email and I will forward them to you.

You might try a hobby shop that caters to model R.R. stuff, they may have thin plastic sheets with corrugations close enough to work. On Vaillancourt's plans, he suggests small plastic "angle iron" from Plastruct, 1/8 inch on a side, pieces come about two feet long. Cut to length and place them one at a time.

Hello. I am building that very same plane. After spending a lot of money to get back into this hobby along with a lot of time. Im having trouble getting the fueslage together. Everything forward of f-3 isn't right. I was wondering if you or someone you know can help. It doesnt seem like there are a lot of people who have built this plane. some things on the plan dont match up or are the wrong size. what I'm looking for are some photos of what this thing is supposed to look like. The landing Gear Block and Doublers. If you can help Please Email me. [email protected]. Thanks

Don't know if these will help. I'll post these here in case the next guy gets stuck. Don't know where you're at, but recommend you test fit the wing to the fuse, adding some windshield material to the area forward of F3. I have to angle my wing into place-it's a very tight fit!

Hello,

I would like to know if you know how much this L-19 weighs completely ready to fly? Thanks for your photos - they are good!

Regards,
Fred
