Thanks all,

I did some more work on the plane. Added the pilots footstep. Repainted the shutters, they were first black but the New Zealand example has shutters in metal look. And I knotted the trapezium.

Hi Sunny,

Thanks.

Still has to weight her definite, but last time with almost all gear fitted she was between 3500 and 3750 grams.

Succes with your build and keep us posted.

After I changed the radiator colors to black and White as per example, I decided she is finished.............................

Only last things to do are;

* Trying to make a trip to Chris so he can see her before the maidenflight (you never knows...... ).
* Running the engine to check the scale exhaust systems works fine.
* Waiting for some good weather.

I did today a first trial run with the engine and scale exhaust system. it looks like everything works fine without any noticeable problems. The prop is a bit to large (15x4) and runs now max 6300 rpm. Exhaust on the outside stays cool after 5 minutes run time, I could touch him with my hands without burning my fingers.

Later more.

Yesterday I had some time for the second and final engine test run. This time with a 12x6 prop that fits much better to this engine and gives 9000 rpm at full throttle. The engine runs perfect with this prop and picks up rpm verry good to full speed. Sound is perfect with this exhaust system and sounded much better in real.

I also had to replace my new 4-cel NiMh receiver pack due to a bad cell. Lucky enough it happened at the ground tests and not in the air. My Weatronic telemetry gave me a perfect notice about the battery failllure and the later readout on my pc confirmed the dead cell. I am now over to 5-cell eneloop packs with voltage regulator as in all my other models.

All what is left is the maiden flight. Our home field is still a little to wet to mow for the first time after the winter but I think it is possible within two to three weeks from now.

It looks and sounds ready to take to the skies! Here's hoping for some dry weather.

PS. Maybe I'll have a change to see it in person in July since I'll be going to Germany for a conference.

Hey Teus, yes, we're hoping to hold the International CD-Scaledesigns Meeting in July, when Don is here. We're working on the excact date. The name might be a bit far fetched as there will probably be only five models there

She flys very well, I am a very happy man

Today there was no way back, it was maiden day. In the begin of the afternoon the wind speed was still a little to high but later in the afternoon it was good enough to fly the Se-5a.

She went away very stable after applying speed and lifting her tail and a little up and she was airborne. I gained some height to check the controls. I only needed a click of up trim. The engine runs very well, but on the first flight a little rich. Second flight much better and the model performs good but not overpowered, maybe a Saito 56 will do the job a little better but for now it is good enough. Landings are no problem. Just keep up the speed a little and she come down on her wheels and rolling out after throttling back.

In the air she looks and sounds fantastic and I am very happy with the result and performance so far. Now it is time to learn the model and enjoy.

Yowza! You da man! [sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif] You build an absolutely stunning scale model and it looks spectacular in the air...which is where all great scale models belong!

Chris, we need some kind of CD Scale Award Certificate for a successful prototype maiden!

Teus, Congratulations on your successful maiden flight and hopefully a few more since then.
Thats a great looking plane you built, I remember that color scheme from the Data file front cover..I think the original pilot's name was Hugh something who passed away a few years ago..he would have been proud to see his namesake aircraft in the air again I'm sure!
I have been building a 1/4 scale SE5a off and on now for over 15 yrs ( long story.. many moves from different countries etc.)
I really hope to have it finished this year..(just another 500 hrs I estimate!!)..

Anyway love to see those SE5s in the air where they belong...thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks all for the compliments.

All you guys were my inspiration to make this fine little model to the stage she is now. Thanks for that.

One more photo. I photoshopped this one a little bit because he was to dark to publish at first. I think it look good enough now.

Default RE: CD-ScaleDesigns RAF SE-5a build

Two days ago we had finally some decent weather to fly my SE-5a again. I managed two good flights but started with a nose over at my first try this day!

This was my own fault because I placed the model not correctly in the wind and that resulted in the nose over after some over correcting from rudder to try to hold the model on track. fortunate there were only two not important rigging wires broken so I could try it again.

The next two flight were perfect and I feel now more confident flying the model after four flights. After the first flights I thought the engine was a bit to light but now after two more flights I have to correct this. The Saito 50 is more than enough en I can fly the model with good speed.

A friend did make the movie for me with my small compact camera. Unfortunately we had overcast weather but enough light for this small camera to see the model. I hope to make a better movie with clear blue sky at the end of this week.

That is excellent, Teus. I'm glad it worked out so well. I guess you can't go wrong with a design like an SE-5a. Sorry for not getting back to you earlier - you know, job, family and all the other real life burdens . Hope to see you at the dutch fly in in early July. Chris

That should be great Chris,

In the meantime I managed two more flights last Saturday with better weather. Lots of sunshine but still a gusty wind with speeds up to 10 a 12 mph. She fly very well with these wind speeds but need good attention, especially during landing approach and landing. Hopefully next time with normal wind conditions for this model.

Here a small video again from the first flight that day.

Just received my scale flying prop (12x6 Xoar) from Glass Kote UK. Looks much better than the standard Graupner prop.
