I made 5 more flights today and they went all well.

It was a beautiful day with almost no wind, but when there was wind she came from all directions and was very turbulent. I noticed that the power is minimal with no wind and I have to fly the plane very carefully. I also noticed that when there was wind the plane reacts more than I thought it should do in the first place, she is a kind of sensitive with wind. Next day out I will also try a more forward C of G. Maybe it helps.

nice build teus, incredible detail for a 1/6 scale plane. i guess were showing the1/3 and 1/4 guys a thing or two. ive seen 1/4 scales that dont look as good. phenominal work. i love 1/6 scale because it's not easy to get that kind of detail where as a 1/3 you can fit your whole arm in instead of a finger. excellent work that's all i can say, she's a beauty. we ought to start are own club only 1/6 scale museum quality. i dont think alot of people really know how hard it is getting that kinda detail in a 1/6 scale it takes an entirely different skill set, abufletcher will back me up on this. it warms my heart all you flyers getting into the heart and soul of detail building.

We just had the Dutch Dawn patrol meeting this day and I was also there with my SE-5a. My SE-5a was not the only CD-ScaleDesigns model, we had 5 at the field!

CTDavies, Abufletcher and Fliegertom were also there with there models, so we had 2 Pups, a Snipe a C1 and my SE-5a on the field today from CD-ScaleDesigns.

Tom and I made also a duo flight together, and as you can see Don and Chris had a great time between the models. We had a good time, thanks again guys and see you next year [8D]

The last month I made several flights with the SE-5a and feel much more conformable to fly her. Just before the Dutch Dawn Patrol I added an extra 60 grams lead in the nose that proved to be right on spot. Takeoffs and landings are even better (more controllable), the sensitivity in the wind is also improved.

I made this afternoon also two flights in perfect weather and the only thing what can be improved right now is the engine. She performs good but it is the absolute minimum I think. A Saito 56 or 62 (same dimensions as the 50) is on my wish list to replace the Saito 50 next winter.

Why is it so hard with Biplanes to figure out the "right" ( more than adequate) engine power ?? I see over and over on this forum threads about pilots having to upgrade their power ratings to get decent flying characteristics and not fly on the lower edge of the envelope.. I know there is a strong argument to have it motorized as close to the original to be more realistic in flight but it's so easy to plan for more power reserve ahead of time rather than having to retool and rework the front end and have to recess firewalls etc. and the like as an after thought.
I would always to choose the top engine size recommended by the manufacturer as heavy scale modifications creep up on us mysteriously and always seem send up heavier than planned...

Any idea who the owner / builder was??

Looks like an original ( or new built) Hispano Suisa or Wosely Viper up front

The reason I opted for the Saito 50 is that I had it on the shelf at the time I started building, CD-Scaledesigns recommended a 56.

I thought the 50 could do the job as I want to build her first a bit more "sport" without all the extra scale weight. But time changed things and I build in a lot of (heavy) scale options which I don't regret.

With the 50 you can fly the model very scale, maybe a bit fast due to the weight and size of this model, but she fly very good. The reason I want to upgrade the engine is more for safety matters during takeoffs, now I have nothing over and need to build up all the speed before I can lift her in the air (very scale like). You can see the power is just marginal at takeoffs, that's all. For flying it is not necessary.

My Puppeteer, at 4.2kg with a Saito 56, has the bare minimum of power. And in some ways I enjoy how it FORCES me to fly. Take-offs, as Teus says, are long, slow, and scale affairs. And you definitely have to FLY the model all the time...no relying on the power along to keep the thing aloft. Still, I guess I'd really rather have a 62 or even a 72 in the model to be able to do more "combat style" maneuvers.

I believe it is Jack Kearbey's replica. 11,500hrs to build. I did not see it fly as the weather was a little iffy when the WW1 planes flew, but a Dr1,D8, and D7 did fly.

I visited Old Warden in England about ten yrs. ago and to my amazement they had the WWI original SE5a Nr F-904 in the air in almost gale force winds....now here is a two ton biplane standing still in the air!!...the new pilot was practicing getting near stall speed !! it was incredible to watch it for about 5 minutes absolutely frozen in the sky.
I believe Jack Kearby's SE5 is for sale.....humm lemme see ...how much I got here... after what I've spent on scale models I should have bough me, or built me ,an original !!

I received some very kind compliments from the full scale example owner, it gives me a very satisfied feeling. [8D]

Greetings Teus,

I would like to congratulate you on your fine model of the RAF SE.5a, Phil Makanna sent me a few pictures of your model and it looks fantastic.
Almost as nice as the real thing!

Good luck with it.

Hi Greg,

Good choice, I hope you enjoy the build as much as I did.

Do you mean the exhaust end highlighted in the photo?
