Hi all. Anyone with experience flying the Royal P38 have any data on actual AUW and/or wing loading? I am curious to find out what kind of wing loading I should be shooting for as I work toward completing this model.

I have been a big fan of Royal P-38s for 30 years, and remember every one I saw and always asked how much weight and power when I saw one.. I finaly got my first one going years ago and have in process two more. The lightest I have seen is 11 pounds. Mine, the one I flew just yesterday weighs 13 pounds. With no flaps its a little heavy on landing. But most I have seen are about 12 pounds. Wing loading? most ARF flyers would not beleve[X(]. For power I have seen K&B .40's to 91FS's. My belief is that two .46 two strokes are perfect. The best that money can buy. Don't be cheep. If you lose one you will never forget it. Or just blame it on the radio!!

It looks like I am going to be around 13lbs. I am thinking I might start looking into flap options. The frame is completely bare, so now is the time to consider it. Just not sure if the flaps would be enough to offset the additional weight. Am I better off trying to lighten it up? I might be able to lose a few oz. of balsa here and there.

Yes if you can lighten it that is always good. At least split flaps will definately help. Fowler flaps are best but more work to install. They add the most lift and they are scale! My next R. P-38, the wreck will have fowlers. Ha, I call it right now the P-38 in a bag!

Can anyone identify this Royal kit? It is suppose to be The Cherry. No one seems to recognize it! I am trying to either locate one ( small chance) or at least get plans for one........It was built about 1973 and is an RC that was gas powered........Thanks so much! Patsy

Stick08, beautiful Zero. Even got the Nav light's and everything. I've got one in a box I bought when I heard the Royal kits were being discontinued. One day when I get back it will be built. Hopefully as nice as yours. Wonderful plane!!!

I was wondering if any readers have started any Royal FW 190A8 builds other than me, they come up on ebay and get snatched up but it seems there is never any posting about the building and flying habbits on this one.
since I am in process of making a kit copy,using a origonal kit for my templates, and some USwing after market parts.
it definatly is a good base for building but there is some old tech.building processes going on there with all the wood blocks that I have been working toward eliminating or reducing in my build.
I also have a couple more of these kits I have aquired.
a 60 size Me109,and a junior zero which from the plans looks pretty nice,I have them stored for later projects.

this is a great read,and a great line of kits,to bad there not produced anymore there fairly easy to build,even though the instructions are not the best.
one thing I did find as I have been working out the kinks on my build is there are some parts that are not covered well in the plans,and have a limited description in the instrictions.
building from these plans although not impossable is a definate challenge,certainly for a first time plan builder it presents some hurdles.
if it were not for the kit I have for reference I would have had a real hard time figuring out some of the little details otherwise its moving along nicely,I am going to post some progress on my retractable tail wheel and the mods needed for installation this afternoon.

Patsy, I am afraid this is a new one for me. Anyone else? Looks like a nice sport plane..Royals were mostly scale designs as far as I remember. Bigtim, I remember reading the RCM revue on the FW-190. It was favorable, looked quite scale. It had a nice looking aluminum cowl. Obviously, this one is especially hard to keep the tail light enough to balance well. I seem to remember lots of lead was needed in front. Maybe a big four-stroke would help? - Regards, Eric

Big Tim I built tha FW about 20 some years ago. I added about 3/4 of an inch to the nose to help ballance,<nobody even noticed it> flew it with a webra 60. I had B&D mechanical retracts. It was by far the best flying warbird I ever had. easy to take off and land. I flew it for 15 or so years. Lost it due to a bad switch. Good luck with yours. Hello

Here is my Royal Zero (A6M5-b mod.52).
It was finished and flown in year 1997, therefore the picture quality is not so good.
I made several modifications on it, like rectractable/springloaded main gears with doors, homemade rectractable/steerable tail gear, switchable lights, homemade cockpit with open/closed window, homemade fully inclosed muffler, modified engine cowling with dummy exhaust stacks and dummy three bladed propeller and spinner.
In the wings I built in a 2 degrees wash out, like the real Zero, for better stall caracteristics.
The Zero was fitted with a Super Tigre G90 engine, JR-radio and Futaba servos.
Total weight was 5 Kg and no ballast needed for balancing.

Now that's what i'm talking about! Teriffic work Zero freak! Very nice craftsmanship from what I see, and beautifull photos. I am sure you may inspire someone with your work. I kinda liked my rivet detail, but yours probably is a superior build compared to mine! Bravo!

I love all the great pics, lets get more of this, and don't hesitate if you feel your model doesn't quite measure-up in your mind. All of us Royal (OK Marutaka) builders appreciate it! Eric

Wow! Great Zero! Does it still live?

No, unfortunately it crashed in a landing process – pilot error.
Previous flights I used to lower the gears first and then the flaps.
When gears was down the Zero had a little nose down attitude, but when flaps came down, it stabilized itself and was rock solid on landing approaches.
But for a change I would try to lowered the flaps first and then the gears – stupid.
At low altitude and downwind with low speed I lowered the flaps, and the Zero boomed up very rapidly and stalled.
I quickly gave full power on the engine, flaps up, and tried to softly pull up on the elevators, but it was too late. I never got the Zero under control again, and then it happened.

Ouch! I am sorry that was a very nice Zero. It does look like it could live again with some work.
