The Stearman is a lovely plane. I built a Sterling U-control Stearman with an Enya .35 in it in 1968. Phew! That was a long, long time ago. I built it while student teaching in Flint, MI. I lived in Philly and Flint, MI was a long way away. To make matters worse, I was engaged to my sweetheart (still married to her) so I was miserable and lonely. I was rooming at an older women's house (grandmother old) and she was wonderful and let me set up a model building desk in the living room. It was a tiny shotgun house so space was very precious. I was building a model a week and ended building something more challenging, the Stearman. It came out nice.
Unfortunately, I knew nothing about flying U-control and thought you needed to give it up elevator to make it take off. We were at a Labor Day picnic just after I graduated and got married and were with all of our friends. I asked my buddy if the elevators were up and he gave an affirmative. He let the plane go which immediately took off straight up. It did a wing over at the top, and started hurtling directly at ME. The lines were now slack so I had no control whatsoever. I jumped out the way as the plane re-kitted itself. It was sad and absolutely, totally and in every other possible way humiliating. Needless to say, there was uproarious laughter. If America's Funniest Home Videos existed then, it would have been on it. It was years before I attempted flying anything again.

Anyone out there, with a set of plans for the Royal/Maratuka B-17, can tell me what down thrust is called for in the plans? Also, just curious what the wing stab incedence be?
Thanks

For the Marutaka kit (which I believe is the Royal's twin), the down thrust was -2º to cancel the wings +2º angle of attack, and the side thrust is Right 1º for the right hand engines and left 1º for the left hand engines. I used the Dave Brown mounts with thrust plates behind to generate the two angles. I don't believe the downthrust was built into the stock engine rails in the nacelles automatically.

Its hard to make progress when work keeps getting in the way! I've got 4 oil burners installed on my B-17 now. Sanding and filling the wing took forever!
Looks like RC universe is not loading my pictures. Too bad.......

I just checked your purchase in the Cost Of Living Calculator. If you paid $175 today, that's the equivalent of having paid $30.84 in 1970. I don't recall what the Royal kits were costing in the hobby shops in 1970, but it was probably more than $30.
So you did just fine.

When I was in the hobby business back in the early 90's we sold the Royal P-38 for $259.99.
Much later I ended up getting that partialy built kit for a trade.

That would be a LOT of bashing. Only the horizontal is the same. I say bash it into a Mustang
I just sold my Hien sr. last year. It was about 40% built. I only have time for U.S. aircraft these days.

Woo Hoo Pictures! It is so nice to be able to post pictures again! That is if anybody cares? Royal kits are for BUILDING! Not just collecting.
I had a little trouble with getting the landing gear the way I wanted. My strut idea did not work out very well. So I just made a single strut. Robart 530's 85 deg. air retracts. Very good quality. Will last at least 20 years! And the Robostruts are cut very short just to fit in the wells. The B-17 had a very low deck angle.

I just finished getting the cowls on. I am going to set the wing aside to work on the fuse. The OS .15CV's fit inside. I am going to use the stock mufflers with OS extentions. I had to skew # 3 a bit so that the gear will clear the muffler.
I vowed to never compete in contests with a bomber again after my dismal showing at the Scale Masters 2007. So this bird is just for fun. In fact always building documented models with nose art and none of them with my wifes name, this one will have her on it. Gotta score points ya know with Xmas comming
