An interesting story about having your wife's name on your B-17. Back in the late 1960's my boss called me into his office to show me a book somebody had just sent him. My boss had been a B-17 pilot during WWII and the book contained a lot of B-17 photos.

Perry directed my attention to one particular photo and asked if I noticed anything unusual. I immediately saw that the plane had German markings. But he told me to look closer. After a bit of study, I realized that the plane still carried its American nose art. It said, "Phyllis Marie". That was Perry's wife's name.

According to the text, the next crew to take over the plane after Perry's crew rotated home suffered flak damage and had to land on the continent. The Germans repaired the plane and used it for various purposes until the war ended. Perry had never known what happened to his plane after he went home.

You can see the picture on the net by googling "B-17 Phyllis Marie". Their son later wrote a novel based on his Dad's wartime experiences.

Very interesting! My Dad was in the Pacific in WWII. I am sitting on his story, gotta do something with it someday.

Just a little follow up on the Hein kit,, I got it the other day, the plans look like they've never been out of the box,, this is the best condition old stock kit I've ever seen..

Same guy is selling me a Red Box Zero,, I plan to make it into a Rufe since I have the conversion plans..

Great kits are still out there

I e-mailed him and he told me that he plans to eventually have most of the Royal/Maratuka line available.
I don't have any idea how the quality is, but price seems reasonable. He relsits every few days.

I'm kinda hoping he will do the Cessna 310. I have one that someone "tried" to build and completely destroyed it, but all the goodies like cockpit kit, tip tanks, glazing, and plans are all still good.

I brought my two bombers to the field today and got some more pics. Flew the 24 a couple times. By the way the Century Jet Scale B-17 retracts ARE NO DIFFERENT than the Robart retracts, unless they are different than the website shows. I like Robarts struts better.

Still making progress, The split flaps are on now and very soon I'll be putting on a coat of primer. Pretty neat how the engines fit compleatly inside the cowls! All plastic, fiberglass and plans are available from EBay. Anyone can build a Royal B-17 even if you do not have the kit!!

By the way I have to say again how fun it is to run 4 perfectly running glow engines. If they were electric I'd probably fall asleep from bordom.

Yea, I tend to agree on the electrics. Can you imagine going to an electric "top fuel dragster" race? Whirrrrrrrrrrrr!! Wow! How exciting is that. Who in their right mind, and who wants to duplicate the reality of a twelve cylinder 2000hp Packard Merlin engine (say, in a Mustang), would choose a quiet electric motor? Nonsense I say! The point of scale models is not just to duplicate the outline....but the entire "presence and spirit" of the original. ;-)

But electrics with those spectacular sound systems is a totally different thing. The sound systems make the electrics much better than I.C. It also adds $$ and weight which negates some of electric's charm, but the sounds are wonderful.

I agree about the weight...on the full scale Mustang, for instance, they contemplated removing the cool sound system because it was so heavy! Thank goodness they left it...very cool sounding. The fake exhaust stacks and exhaust smoke system added a lot to the image of the real ones also! It is little known that two thirds of the R.A.F. actually just manned the fast chargers on the spitfires for flight at a moments notice. Unfortunately ninety percent of lost Spitfires were due to fires in the batteries, and loss of performance with battery drain! The earliest "modern" batteries arrived in Europe just in time for the Mustang, and allowed it to loiter over Germany longer than the Spitfire. Most of the Messerschmidts never actually left the ground....owing to the superior sound systems of the famous allied fighter!

What did you do for the machine guns? Looks good and you know it flies. What paint did you use and how did you apply it? Questions, questions.

The guns are just 1/8th brass tube with a balsa block for the back (breach?). I just keeped the KlassKote grey primer for the bottom, and the top is Testors Model Master spray can Olive Drab with a template held off an inch or so for the feathering. The decals are from Cal-Grafx. The pin up girl is from Pin ups .com- found the perfect one to (resemble) my wife with a parrot on her shoulder. The rest is hand painted. And over the decals and all, is KlassKote clear for fuelproofing- cause this bird is an oil burner! I had some great chalk weathering but it dissapeared with the clear coat. Final weight will be 12.5 pounds. When I got it, it was over 16 pounds, and no retracts or flaps.
I used a spray gun for the Klasskote.

Wow! It's got to be fast! Where did all the weight go? I never thought of using standard paints and then clear coating. It would have been much easier than hand painting Warbird Cross-linked Acrylic.

The weight, well first it originaly had .40's on on it. It now has .15's. That was two pounds alone. It had a very heavy coat of paint and resin and very heavy radio gear. I did a lot of grinding with my Dremel. The fixed gear set up it had would have worked on a 30 pound plane, I had to tear it down to the bone to get that out. I spent a month sanding all that paint down. The plane was originaly fiberglassed. That is why it will last a long time.
