Cool looking engine! What does it take to go from a casting kit to a running engine? What do the casting kits cost?

Took my Royal Baron to my first scale meet yesterday. Out of so many beautiful planes. It took 1st place in sportsman. Pretty honored that it took first. And was the oldest plane by far there.

I flew it 4 times and I have it dialed in to where it's wonderful to fly. It was tricky and finicky to fly. After checking all of the incidences I decided to try a gyro. So we added a hobby king type gyro to it and it flies like a pattern plane. Smooth as silk. I have a aura 8 super nice gyro coming to dial it in more. Everyone was impressed with the flights and sounds of the electric twin.

Pretty stoked!! I even beat some of the bigger guys who always win with there builds.

Thanks. Pretty stoked. Didn't think it would even get noticed with about 84 other planes there.

Seems that folks are cleaning out some closets. I just looked on ebay and spotted several Royal kits within just a minute or two of searching for 'Royal RC Airplanes"... The same F8F posted above has been relisted, plus one Fw-190, two different sizes of Bf-109s, two C-47s and P-38 and a B-25 and a couple of small Mustangs..
I'd love the Fw-190 but the price is a little steep for me.

I can relate, I don't see myself being able to afford those prices either.

Especially when you look around a bit to see what else you have to choose from if you're planning to spend nearly $500. Kits, short-kits, etc.
For instance, this Jemco Dauntless is a very nice kit for the price-

I've said it before but I will say it again, I don't understand the current demand for the Royal / Marutaka kits and the exorbitant prices that are the result of it. The kits were not considered particularly good bargains when they were readily available. At least not with the builders I hung around with. In fact most guys I knew thought of them as pretty archaic for the most part. Poor instructions, large chunks of balsa to carve, heavy, and with just a couple of exceptions not particularly scale. Personally I had a hard time spending $150 for one back then, much less twice that (or more) now! I guess the nostalgia must be worth something to a lot of people.

Yeah, that's about the size of it Chad. I still have the desire to have certain examples but it's definitely nostalgia. I used to look at one particular color, full page ad back in the 80's where there were dozens of kit boxes stacked and just dream of having a Ki-61, Zero, Fw-190, Corsair, Hawk, etc.

That Jemco does have a lot of bang for the buck. The only drawback in my eyes is the foam wings. I'm one of those nut cases that likes building wings.

Yeah, it's tempting. I need to build something or fly something that I already HAVE before I buy anything else though.

Somebody is proud of this one... Very nice job except for the cowl gun blisters are a little oversized. http://www.ebay.com/itm/FOCKE-WULF-F...25.m3641.l6368

Like I always say when someone wants to buy one of my old classic cars..."When something is not for sale, it's very expensive!"
