That's a bute' ampeater! Is that the Flite Metal? It looks like you're doing a great job, you might note Scale Dails comment on the nose gear if you are "doin' it up scale". Send more pics when you get a chance, I really love Royal's P-38.

Well I loved the Royal kits, here are two that I built. still have a Zero to go. These are pictures of pictures, we did not have digital back then. I still have the Spit but the F8F was sold, "stupid".

Yes those are real nasty picture of my old 38 I guess I'll take her down in the next day or so and dust it off and take some better pictures.And yes I can work over those gauges.I have done alot of full scale airplane clocks.

Clocknut, thinking of something here. Could you provide, due to your trade, some information on jewelers fasteners and good sources for such? I'm thinking of all kinds of scale uses; there used to be a hobby company that made them available. What would one use for a good bit to countersink those micro-bolts/screws? Also, on a different note, I wish all those people who do watch Ebay, to occasionally give us all more of a heads-up on Royal stuff. That may be counter-intuitive if you want to limit competition on bidding, but we're all nice and cooperative here; right?

On the counter sinks etc clock/watch tools try time savers.get there cataloge they have some great tools all you guys can use for this hobbie I have most of what they offer and it really helps me out making alot of this.the catalog is $5.00 but I think you get that back on your first order.I can give other suppliers if that doesn't work for you.

Thanks Clocknut, i'll check it out. The nuts and bolts were what I was mainly thinking of. Here are some misc. pics of me at a club in Boulder, CO, Sun 'n Fun fly-in, and My ramp at the alma mater. That's me the "author" here..ha ha Sorry about picture quality, they're pics of pics (didn't have a digital then). Can one digitize from negatives, anyone?

Oh and the Cub is an old Model Engineering of Norwalk kit. It is 100% aircraft ply and coverite if you can believe it! Undercambered wing (72 inch), three channel (flies like a motor glider with a brick attached). The big one is a Cessna T-303 crusader (named after it's cruciform tail), it was a nice big plane to learn multi-engine on.

Hey what kind of range to you get out of your transmitter when you fly those big ones
I just seen that you are form Co. There is another place just north of Denver in Broomfield called mile high clock supply phone number is 303-469-1220 I don't think they have A web site?
You might just walk right in and set right down and get what you need.

I'll look into it Clocknut, Thanks. I hope no one minds the author going off topic ocassionaly here. I, and others are going to do a group build on a 1/6th Royal Corsair project here (RCU) BTW. This will be very invigorating for me. Some may find it interesting to watch (and we got a talented leader). I figure the planes will get built over a year or two (three?), and be quite good. I want to keep this thread going though, so keep bringing in your great Royal projects, existing planes, old soldiers, e.t.c. This is truly a "catch all" thread. - The management (ha ha).

Clocknut, I almost missed your new post, thank you. I am not sure what you were getting at with range. The radio is the same but bigger planes are easier to see at longer range. I hope I didn't missunderstand.

I'm still not sure what you mean, but Nav and Com are on VHF "line of sight" range. Thankfully no controllers on the ground intercede with control as of yet! You were supposed to give visible evidence of Royal kit building in the form of piles of shavings and balsa dust!

Oh, and yes the range is more than a mile on the big one

Well guys I took down my old p-38 Royal kit and dusted it off.I looked it over (haven't really looked at it for a few years)and took some pictures of it.
The thing is I don't think I will finish it sorry,but it just doesn't turn me on anymore I think I would spend my time on a big biplane. I think I will put it on the rc board and trade it off/sell.Hope this is Ok with the rules????

I think I know who might be interested here, we'll see if he bites. Too bad, no retracts, but it might be a good one for someone who just wants to finish and fly her. I am sure it would finish easily, but could you check the wing with an incidence meter? If you don't have Robart's meter you should get one; they are indispensable. You could also check the decalage (the angle of incidence difference between wing and stabilizer). Is the canopy mounted in that "off keel" way, or just sitting there?

Let us know when you post it for sale here, and where. I haven't used this part of RCU before.

Riddle, it is posted already.....get on it man. I noticed the big corsair thread starting up...you guys make it tuff on a guy. I am trying to finish what I have and you guys go and dangle a carrot in front of me. good luck with it, I think I saw that you will be building one also.

Yessiree, Rambro. That is going to be a fun one. I'll check that P-38 auction here, I can't buy anything with this big project starting up though. I gotta save for the Laser 300! My post near the top there shows my planned scheme and parts list. The profile on the right shows a darker upper shade of blue, I think the color is better on the one on the left (and I have a good profile/planview color plate that I will use for documentation).

Editing here.. I want to say (again), this thread can be read from the top and you'll find good stuff. This thread has value in that it is not necessarily sequential (like a bad TV series). Stick 08, that looks terrific. I assume that is masking for the canopy. I gotta finish mine up in the weathering/markings (see post #1), e.t.c. Your gear looks better than mine..but mine is an old school '70s machine with Rhom gear! I need to find some bell-bottom corduroys for the maiden voyage (maybe not)!!

I am glad to see such an enthusiastic group dedicated to all things Royal. I have been in this hobby for more than 25 years now. I remember my dad and I sitting out in our shop for hours, days, weeks during our "winter build" sessions. He was always a much more patient builder than I and I will never be able to thank him enough for financing my early years. I never thought twice about building and crashing back then. A new kit and gear always seemed to be waiting on my side of the shop. Here is a picture of my dad and I back in the day. This must have been around the late 80s or so.

Anyway, you will notice in the picture that my dad is showing off his "new" project. It is a Royal P-38 ofcourse. For whatever reason he never finished the build. About 5 years ago, my parents decided to retire and become full-time RVers, so they sold everything and I got to keep the contents of the old shop, P-38 included. Having a resource like this forum will be critical to my success. Don't look for updates anytime soon. It will still be a while before I really dig in, but just couldn't help posting here and saying hello. I will most likely finish this build as an electric as I have started to move in that direction. I think my dad's original intention was to put a couple .46 or .61 size engines in her. I will have to see if he remembers. Traditional glow is still a possibility.

loftt....That is one of the nicest posts here, in terms of sentiment particularly. I thank you greatly! The joy of the hobby is evident in the way you tell the cross-generational tale. That is partially what is missing in keeping our hobby healthy, but also people get in and out, and back in, to this hobby all the time, if you listen to a lot of people; it is the reality. Many always seem to come back. I think this means that there are a lot of latent hobbiests out there who just haven't come back quite yet. My father taught me how to care about doing the best job you could on a model airplane..and everything else too. Lots of lessons to be learned about skill, attention to detail, following through, and also dealing with loss. Always get up and pick up the pieces, and learn, and progress! I think you brought up one of the best experiences in the hobby; that is sharing it with people you love. - Thanks, Eric
