RE: Byron Wedell Williams Racer Build
RC..I'm sure you are capable of flying anything...no offense intended...just meant that any pilot who has the dream and guts and takes the meticulous time to build such a quality aircraft should be THE MAN to fly it...never know how long it will last..
A friend of mine bult the same Byron kit, I did all his graphics in cut vinyl for him..it flew wonderfully and did inverted as well as upright like on a wire.
Pete, I was the one who sent you the Wedell plastic kit over 1 yr ago, glad to see you did this one justice...she's georgeous..well worth all the hard work...I've enjoyed your build immensely

Mein Duff,
The documentation Williams Brothers included with the Wedell model was a BIG help in painting as well as the graphics. I appreciate getting it from you.
Dan,
Not going anywhere still have some posts and the maiden to do.

Luke,
Good to have you back and appreciate the kind words, from you that's special.

Thanks a bunch.
Worked on CG today as it was a bit warmer. Snowed yesterday and never made it above 33F [&o] I made a weight basket to hang on the prop bolt that accepts birdshot. Place the plane in the Vanessa rig and kept leveling the plane at the desired CG while adding shot. She ended up needing 1lb 12 oz. I then weighed her and she came in at 26.3 lbs [8D]. I'm pretty happy with that as the prototype weighed 25lbs and took 12 to 14oz of noseweight. I know the aft flying wires and the offsetting noseweight accounted for most of the extra weight. The G62 should really make her move at this weight.
My plan is to substitute the aluminum Bennett spinner hub for a brass hub. I purchased a bar of 2in diameter brass on ebay that will be cut down to 2 to 2.25in and turned on a lathe. That should make up most of the weight. will rebalance and any extra weight will be placed in the cowl rim as per Byron's instructions.
Added the main wing flying wires using the silver plastic shoelace material.

Spent a few hours with my friend Mel and he turned a beautiful spinner weight. 2.25in long and it weighs 22.3oz. We balanced the spinner and it will be held on with a TruTurn 10-32 bolt. I rebalanced the plane with the spinner and the remaining weight will be placed in the cowl. I prepped the fiberglass surface. Cut a few strips of fiberglass cloth on the bias. Measured out the west epoxy with the shot on the scale. Distributed the shot along the lower rim and covered it with the fiberglass cloth. This should keep it all solidly in place.

Here's an interesting bit of trivia,
#44 and Roscoe Turner's #121 Gilmore were 2 completely different airplanes although they looked similar. Gilmore had a slightly larger wing area and after the accident in '36 Matty Laird repaired the airplane and shortened the aft fuselage when he rebuilt it.

With your experience, I know that you know that putting such a heavy weight on your engine's crank shaft is detrimental to the engine, especially the front bearing. It is a huge force under vibration and the gyroscopic effect. The same is true for the cowl. There is a very heavy weight extended well beyond the mounting screws. That is called a cantilever and is exposed to the same forces. You are better off loading up the firewall. Dan.

Dan,
I considered that. The Cowl only has 8oz of added weight and the prototype took 12 to 14oz in the same location with no problem so I'm not concerned there. The Spinner is balanced but I agree it's heavy. We have three other engines at in our club that Mel has made similar spinners for and those engines (all DLE 55's) and have been running with no problems but none were heavier than 16oz. When I ground run the engine I'll see what's what and may need to add a larger amount of weight in a box on the firewall with a lighter spinner. Thanks for the feedback.
US185Damiani,
Nice bit of trivia. Rosco Turner was flying to Cleveland for the Bendix Trophy Race and had an engine failure due to carburetor icing over Arizona. The rebuilt plane also had new gear struts and a device that injected alcohol into the carb to dissolve ice.

Cool stuff huh?
Have you read Roscoe turner's Biography?
Excellent read If you want I'll post the Title and publisher.
(Don't remember it off hand)

Please post the info. You can never get enough good sources from this time.
Will try to ground run the G62 this week[X(]

Merry Christmas everyone.
Finished the cowl by mounting the dummy engine. Made a line around the cowl then ran a bead of aeropoxy. Using balsa spacers to keep the cylinder heads from rubbing on the cowl I set the engine and ran another bead of aeropoxy leaving no voids. When set I used fiberglass cloth and West resin to reinforce the engine.
Been going over everything regarding the CG. Will remove and shorten the Torque Tube the engine mounts on. It's 14in long and has two attachment points the firewall and the first former. The tube extends well aft of this and can easily be shortened. This is all behind the CG so it should help. If I cut it down to 9in this will leave about 3in aft of the F1 mount. Will rebalance and see where we're at. If we need the heavy spinner then I'll replace the front seal with a sealed SS bearing to better support the added weight. The prototype used the Purr Power mount and I believe it's shorter then the tube I used.

I finished dealing with the CG/weight issue by removing 5in from the Torque Tube and I was able to bring the engine 1/16in forward with good clearance from the dummy engine. rebalanced with the original Bennett aluminum spinner showed she needed 21.5oz on the firewall. I cast two lead weights totaling 22oz and zip tied them to the firewall. I placed a piece of leather between the weight and firewall to eliminate any vibration. The leather will hold up nicely without compressing.

SHE HAS A HEARTBEAT
Brought the Wedell out to the field today and ran two tanks of fuel threw her. The G62 took a bit of work to get going at first as the engine took some time to draw fuel to the carb. She was last run 2 yrs ago. After getting choked well she started right up with the spring starter on the second flip. Some adjusting resulted in a great idle and top end with super transition. Everything you want from a G62. Also did a taxi run. The current compression spring setup worked very well. Will need to be careful to let speed bleed off before trying to turn her off the runway.
Will check everything to be sure nothing shook loose then wait for our next good weather day to take some photo's and do the maiden.

Great pictures, I really like you flying wires they are far superior in appearence to the Byron setup.
You are right about slowing before turning when landing or during taxi exercises. What I did on mine was to put a small strip of a clear heavy vinyl that the RC car people use as a scuff protection on their car bodies under each wing tip. It doesnt show on the ground or in flight but it sure helps to prevent cutting thru the fabric and balsa when you get a tip down while it is moving.
Enjoy your first flights. It is a fun airplane.

Thanks ARUP, Chad and Gremlin.
When I was building the wings I thought about adding some structure out at the tip to place a skid or wire if the tip were to hit the ground but at the time I really didn't know just where the tip could hit. Thanks for the "Tip" on the vinyl. Sometimes overbuilding should be restrained.
Gremlin,
Byron only gives one set of throws for control surfaces did you modify them?
