Default BUSA DR1 First Flights, Finally!

I finally got a chance to fly my BUSA DR1 last week after waiting weeks for the crap weather around here to get better. It's a great
flying plane! I thought it might be a little squirrelly in the air but it is very solid. The ailerons are more effective than I thought, the plane even rolls pretty nice. Ground handling is another story. The rudder is not very effective when the tail comes down and it will ground loop pretty easy. I tipped it on its nose a couple times but also did a few decent landings too. Ground handling is going to take some practice, but once it's in the air it's a joy!

Model is balanced right where the plans show. Power is a Homelite 33cc chainsaw conversion, a very nice running engine. Model is finished with Sig Koverall, WB poly fill coats, house paint color coats, and Minwax satin seal coat. Weight of the model is about 14#.

Model still needs a pilot and some lettering on the sides of the fuse.

That looks great Tmoth!! Add a pilot and a scarf in the breeze and you won't be able to tell it's a model! I've always liked the color scheme for the DR1.

Thanks Sean, the pilot's done but I'm glad you mentioned the scarf. I'll definitely have to add that. I'm happy you like the Dr1 camo scheme. I wanted to do something different than the usual all red ones.

BobH,
Yeah, I'm definitely taking it, along with my BUSA Nieuport 28.
I went to the Dawn Patrol event last time and had a blast.

iflewbayou,
I covered the plane with Sig Koverall, stuck down with balsarite and heat shrunk. I filled the weave with Minwax water-based polyurethane, 2 coats right out of the can and a couple more thinned coats. The colors are latex housepaint, some of it sprayed and some brushed on. Then I did a final clearcoat of minwax oil-based satin to seal everything.
