Tiger Moth Plan Problem

Hi All,

I am scratch building a 47.5" Tiger Moth from Gordon Whitehead plans purchased from RCM Plans. The plan number is 793.

I have an issue regarding the front former "F1". On the plan, it is asymmetrical. Running down the centre line, the bottom of the former is 19mm from centre to one side and 23mm from centre to the other side.

I know the actual shape of the port and starbord cowls have different curves going back from their leading edges. The issue is with the asymmetrical former which is actually at the very front of these cowls, ie, the leading edges. So, if I look at the model head on, I would see one side sloping in more than the other before the two cowls start to bulge out.

Questions:-
1. Is the former (and therefor the nose) supposed to be asymmetrical or not.
2. If it asymmetrical, what side cuts in more than the other - port or starbord.
3. Is this likely to be a mistake on the plan.

I think the plan is at fault and if I look head on, the model should be symmetrical at the leading edge of the cowls.

Interested to hear if anyone else has noticed this.

Cheers,
Frank

Don't forget there is a big protruding oil tank on the port side.

Thanks Red B.

That pretty much says it all.

I think you are seeing the designer's intended side thrust built into the nose. Gordon Whitehead knows a thing or two about both designing and drawing - if the copy is true, things will fit.

Here's a couple of shots with the cowls open.
