Need help with RLM colors
1 Attachment(s)
I am looking to identify some of the RLM colors on this FW. Looks like the primary is RLM 74, 75, 76. 04 is yellow, but the blue does not appear to be RLM 24?

Need help with RLM colors
Hi Gert,
I checked that site out yesterday along with some others. This link raises the question of another shade of blue. http://www.eaglestrikeproductions.co...dclimg=ad72140 The color chart at the bottom of the page lists it as a light blue. |

Carey,
Here is a link to another rlm site, they dont have a visual chart, but they have rlm 64 as a light blue. The link you posted states the light blue was a non standard color. http://www.rlm.at/start_e.htm?archiv/rlm/rlm_e.htm&1 This next link(12 oclock high) doesnt have rlm 64 even listed... http://www.xs4all.nl/~rhorta/jgrlm.htm Luftwaffe.de doesnt have it listed either http://www.rlm-colors.com/ (under manufacturing and then colors) Looks like there is a mystery to solve here. Carey, do you have any more info on the plane, the markings are for JG 54 but I cant make out any more of the markings, the cross in the shield seems to be from the 3rd gruppe, but the devil on the nose is of the 2nd staffel of the 1st gruppe. And if it is of the 3rd gruppe, the Tac emblem should be white, black or yellow and not red. Hmmm, odd Warren |

Hi Warren,
The first site you listed does not call the colors for rlm 74, 75 and 76 as I know them. The 2nd site is what I believe most would refer to them as. I would tend to lean towards the 2nd site as a better reference. Interesting thing to look at isn't it? :) |

Carey,
My "Green Hearts" book says that the JG54 bands were RLM 24 Dunkelblau (dark blue), although that color seems to be a bit dark. Maybe with a wash and weathering it could be lightened up to match the color artwork. RLM 78 Hellblau (light blue) is a decent match, but may be a bit lighter than shown on the artist's rendering. Red 1 was flown by Hans Dortenmann, Staffelcaptain of 2/JG54 during the summer of 1944. "Red 1" is a beauty! What a great subject to model! SC http://members.cox.net/wulfman/ |

This Hans Dortenmann? I have a few pics for reference and a little history on him. An interesting story and that's one reason I decided to do this FW. :) This sample of RLM25 is as close as I've found, but varies from other RLM25 colors I've seen. http://www.scaleaero.com/docpath.htm Color sample #3 in the Luftwaffe WWII, markings section at the bottom of the page.

Yep, that's the guy. Nice pic, where did you find it? Please share some of your Dortenmann info.
In my opinion the best source for Luftwaffe colors is the Eagle Editions Luftwaffe Color Chart. Jerry Crandall is a Luftwaffe expert and has contacted the very same company that provided paint to the Luftwaffe in WWII. His chart is created from the actual formulas and comes with a certificate of authenticity from the manufacturer. To see the chart: http://members.cox.net/wulfman5/5/Page_41.html |

Nice book, are they still available? Sent you a PM.

Of course, the old Monogram Painting Guide is long out of print. But, it is directed towards plastic modelers, and their desire to achieve "color perspective", so the colors aren't exactly correct.
The Eagle Edition web site is: http://www.eagle-editions.com/index.html I don't know if the chart is still available or not. Call Judy at: (406) 363-5415 * Orders: 1-800-255-1830 and ask. It was less than $30 (I bought two). I have had several conversations, and business dealings (exchanges of original Luftwaffe photos) with Jerry and Judy Crandall. Jerry is one of the worlds leading Luftwaffe experts, if he says it's correct, I believe him. They are are also great people, and a great source for Luftwaffe info. Tell them Steve Curry sent you. It probably won't get you a discount, but it might get some "brownie points" for me. :) SC |
RE: Need help with RLM colors
I had the same problem, it is really hard to match the colors from pictures. Model Master sells all RLM color in 1/2 OZ quantity. I bought the colors I needed and made my own paint chips.

RE: Need help with RLM colors
Foxx,
Do they have a web site. Thanks. |
RE: Need help with RLM colors
What kind of paint are you looking for. I have all those colors already mixed in latex. I have the Monogram Luftwaffe book with all the color chips. I bought a gallon of each. I even have the yellow and red. It should even have the blue color chip. I'll see when I get home.

RE: Need help with RLM colors
Wow Ty, a Savoia Marchetti (sp) Italian bomber!(?) Scratch built? Cool! How did the Ju88 turn out?
Color by the gallon, wow, baffles the mind,... The speed at which Ty and Chook build amazes me. |
RE: Need help with RLM colors
Carey,
I looked through my Mongram book and can only find a dark blue. That must have been something that was mixed in the field at that time. I have posted the building process on the Marchetti SM 79 on the twins forum. From start until now. It was scrath built and I still have some painting to do. 110" wingspan 84" length 21lbs OS 91 4stroke and 2 Magum 61 4-strokes I built it with the Meister airfoil. Ty |
