RE: Inspiration Point
Some neat ideas being thrown around here! The Magni-Vale sorta remindes me of another very attractive (and hyphenated!) racer, the Nieuport-Delage "Sesquiplane".

Wow Chad, lots of similarities between the two. An interesting note on the Magna-Vale is the use of the rear wing struts having functional flaps. It sort of shows up in this pic.

RE: Inspiration Point
The flap strut is cool! There was a sailplane that used its strut as an airbrake. The strut rotated thu 90 degrees. Wasn't very effective but novel idea. Didn't pre-date the Magni-Vale flap-strut, though!

Here's a neat series of fighters from Belgium that I don't think progressed beyond the prototype stage.

RE: Inspiration Point
Ok, how about a belly button of an airplane but in an "off the beaten path" finish? I've always maintained that if I ever were to build a D model Mustang (iffy at best) it would be finished like one of the Cavalier modified Mustangs which were used in the '50s and '60s as business aircraft. Before the Lear Jet this was how rich businessmen travelled when they needed to get somewhere fast! I absolutely love the standard Cavalier scheme of red or yellow with black and white trim. The jury is still out for me on the tip tanks but I do like the stretched canopy and tall tail common to many of these birds. I cannot recall ever recall seeing a model done up in these colors except for the occassional Monokote covered stand way off scale model. I think a well executed competiton level Mustang done in these colors would be awesome. It would certainly grab my attention much faster than another "Big Beautiful Doll"!

RE: Inspiration Point
It would certainly be a gutsy move to take one of the most celebrated WWII fighters ever...and do it in a civilian scheme. I don't think I'd be able to. But maybe for one of those guys who've spent a lifetime building P-51s over and over, this could be a chance (and a change) of a lifetime! :D

I love war weary aircraft, but the air racers of the late 40's and 50's were what kept the love for planes like the P-51 alive because the public could see them flying. What about this one. Here is history crossing model airplanes, when the P-51 crashed at the air races it crashed into the house next door to this guy, probably the best CL stunt guy ever, https://www.modelaircraft.org/files/WerwageBill.pdf

Chad, Three cheers for the "Dinah" Can I send a deposit? When will I get my kit? Can I have it shipped overnight express? :)

Cool thread Chad, certainly an eclectic mix of subjects!
Here are a few I'd like to do one day. http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/...2623d4be34.jpg http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/...0fdf1b19d6.jpg http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/...2f6cd494ac.jpg http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/...603d7f3407.jpg http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/...f7f3b88b69.jpg http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/...cf65c57a8d.jpg |
RE: Inspiration Point
I, like you, would need about a dozen lifetimes to build (and afford) every project on the 'wish list'....

RE: Inspiration Point
Interesting variety of subjects Sean. I've always thought the CF-100 would translate nicely into model form. A giant scale one built light for twin EDF power would probably fly like a big trainer! I have an affinity for straight wing jets though, particularly the Thunderjet. The only jet I've actually designed at this point though is a small-ish D-558 Skystreak for EDF. Simply have not had the time or money to build it but some day. I think it fits nicely with the theme of this thread so here it is.

RE: Inspiration Point
I like the Crimson Test Tube! I drew some plans for it a couple of years ago. I just don't think I 'want' to afford the turbines bad enough to build it....

RE: Inspiration Point
I always liked the Skystreak. I would like one in about the old 60 size DF size. The Navy use to use the one in Pensacola for airplane maintenance school. I worked with a guy who learned on it. Lucky it was not scrapped the way it was treated.

RE: Inspiration Point
Here are two Italian birds in my "to do" folder that I would like to build at some point. I think the G.55 is particularly well suited for modelling other than the skinny nose (Electric maybe?) and there are a fantastic array of interesting paint jobs to be found for both of these birds.

RE: Inspiration Point
One more for tonight, and another for which I have actually made substantial progress on a set of plans. I fully intend to see this one through to completion eventually.

Ran across another interesting bird today while perusing the web and was reminded of this thread. I can't recall ever seeing this one before but I really like it.
