The Hoosier Dawn Patrol
The Hoosier Dawn Patrol (HDP) is less than 3 weeks away. August 15,16 ,17 at the International Aeromodeling Center, AMA Headquarters, Muncie, Indiana. The event is a WW1 fly in for models pre 1920. Any size and any power. We fly off site 4, which is a grass runway.
Just a few notes: There will not be food vendors on site. So bring what you need. Muncie is less than 10 minutes away with restaurants and grocery stores. Both primitive and Rv camping are permitted. If camping, you must stop at the main building and register. RV hook ups are first come first served. I believe there are 10 on site and plenty more not far away. Primitive camping is set up right behind the pit line. Open fires are not permitted, unless in a grill. http://www.modelaircraft.org/aboutama/camping.aspx Camping, restaurant info, hotel/motel info and driving directions are available on the AMA website http://www.modelaircraft.org/maphotel.aspx Shower facilities are on site and free An over night storage tent will be provided for aircraft. This year, I decided to stream line things more, and have eliminated pilot and raffle prizes. You come to fly , right? The event officially starts Friday morning. Pilots normally start to arrive Wednesday. This is ok as long as you register, if camping, and understand that there will no frequency control on the 72 band until Friday, when we assume control of the frequency board. ALL frequencies are available to us. Any one else flying on the property must use 2.4 gig. There is open flying until Friday morning. I will be on site Thursday afternoon. Registration starts Friday morning. We fly dawn to dusk. Bring electric night flyers if you want. Doesn't have to be WW1 after dark. Landing fee is $25.. More later as I think of it. Post any questions you have here, or email me at [email protected] steve |

Nice photos Lee, every flying site has its own character doesn't it? The national flying site is "big sky country"! Wide open and glorious.

Hello Steve,
I wish I could come this year, with family respnsabilities #1 priority, it's keeping me closer to home this year. Fondy is the same weekend and it's only about a 70 min drive so that's where I will be. I like the all WWI events better than warbirds and classics. I seem to always be flying with a jet and some WWII screamer. I guess it makes it more challenging when you get passed 5 or 6 times in one circut. Hopefully next year. Wild Bill |
Sir Percy
I have been waiting all year for this event. Thank you for all your perseverance in doing all that you do - we have come a long way since the Hamilton County days, eh!? I like what Greg said, "Big sky country!" If you can't fly your plane at the Hoosier Dawn Patrol, then it just isn't flyable! (that applies to all except for Jim) Oh no, did I say that out loud? Art, over and out  |

Great photos Mike, a good recap from last years fun. When I saw your photo of my 1/4 scale pup, I remembered that at HDP 2013 I flew it almost exclusively since the 1/3 scale pup had a failed aileron servo. The 1/4 pup has been to every Hoosier dawn patrol since 2004, it's been a workhorse.

Great photos as usual, Mike!;) (You know you're a good photographer when you can take a picture of your own plane flying!)

You know , Greg, That is probably the only aircraft that can claim flying in every HDP. I still have the planes I flew in the first HDP, but haven't brought them in quite some time. SO, congratulations. Now , what would be really cool, is coming up with a picture for every year.
http://www.hoosierdawnpatrol.com/dp2...ol2004_022.jpg I have searched and cannot find a picture for 2005........Greg, it's on you for this one! |
Greg also won the 2004 pilot's drawing for the BUSA 1/4 scale Pup kit.

Sorry, I think I overstated this a bit... My memory is getting foggy. It has flown in a dawn patrol every year since the first Hoosier Dawn Patrol '04, but not every Hoosier dawn patrol. I couldn't find any photos of me at the '05 Hoosier either. Thinking back, I may have been unable to attend that one since I was probably out in the Nevada desert doing a field test on my company's new diesel engine at the time. She did fly at the '05 Rendezvous. Also, in '08 the 1/4 Pup was out of commission for the Hoosier Dawn Patrol having been mutilated in a mid-air collision at the Arkansas Dawn Patrol a few months earlier. In order to distract the audience from my mistake, I offer this choice photo from the '05 HDP... (also of a mid-air, of sorts):

Bummer ...... I thought we had a record going on here, but I guess not.:(
|
Build us up and then SLAM us down.. Oh well. I guess Futaba will take back that 18 MZ radio. No awards this year......
|
This is why I don't work in marketing... I had to let the data speak & couldn't let the illusion go on any longer.
I was originally trying to correct Mike's statement of "This is Greg Emerick's 1/4 scale Pup. It has been at every Hoosier Dawn Patrol since the beginning (2009).", the year was wrong, the "beginning" was 2004. Sir Percy, please keep my "prize" radio, the 18 MZ; don't send it back to Futaba. You've earned it running the event all these years! Now, having said that, I do have two planes still flying that were at the first Hoosier Dawn Patrol (the Eindecker & the 1/4 Pup). Can anyone top that? Is that worth a prize? Probably not worth an 18MZ though...but maybe one of those cheap "Orange" receivers?? :D -Greg |
My bad on the date (I had ODP on the brain I guess). Had I checked to nice plaque Steve gave out that year......
Thanks for the kind words on the photos Gents. For the record, Lee was flying my Taube so I could get some pics. :) |
