First Scale Build, paint question
Hello all,
I am building a meister scale P-47 and it is getting close to being ready for paint. Pretty much have everything primed and just doing touch up work. My question is I am doing the raid hot mama scheme and wanted to know how do I find out color codes I need for this particular scheme? Or what will the automotive paint store need from me to mix the colors? Thanks in advance Z |
You will need to find out what the colors were. At the paint store, you will choose the colors.
When I buy paint at the auto paint vendor, I bring a color pic of the subject and compare the color to those in their color chart books. You may find it easier to order your paint from Warbird Colors. http://warbirdcolors.com/ They'll have what you need and in quantities suitable for your project. Compare a color pic of Red Hot Mama to their color chart5 and make your selections. If you have good documentation, it should have the color scheme colors listed. It would simplify your choices. |
Thanks! the warbirdcolors place is just the ticket. Any idea how long they take to ship?
I noticed the warbirdcolors paint is water based. Can it be clear coated once all paint is on to protect from exhaust etc?
Warbird color paints can be covered with a clear coat to fuel proof them. Not a problem :)
Thanks Bob. Any automotive clear coat?
I would guess any automotive would work. Since the paint is water base.. it should be fine. But the old advice is to test first. :)
Why not ask Warbird if their clear coat is fuel proof and if so use it?
Robert, I saw the "satin clear" but unlike the others there was no pricing and sizing along with it so not sure it is available. They dont give a phone number to call so I sent a contact request yesterday. Haven't heard anything but in meantime figured I would see what info I could get here
Robert,
What paint did you use on pitts? And did you get it here locally? (Lakeland) |
Warbird colors had their formula changed and the new paints are NOT compatible with their previous fuel proof additive. As such it should be clear coated with another clear.
Thank you for your " formula change" info, Bob. I still have several cans of Warbird Colors that I have used w/ the fuel proof additive. Finding out the additive won't work with the "new" stuff may have saved me some real problems since I had intended to get some more colors. Do you know if the old formula paint can be mixed with the new formula paint if someone one doesn't add the fuel proofer ? Thanks much, 'buff
My guess, and its only a guess is no. Don't mix them because they are a different formula.
You can contact warbird colors to get a sure answer though. |
You may also consider Klass Kote paint. No need to clear.
it is my goto paint. The owner, Nate, will take really good care of you. |
I sent a couple of basic questions to Warbird Colors through their web site approximately two weeks ago, still no reply. Just sayin'.
