Scale Nats

This was my first 1-scale contest 2- First Scale Nats. Flying in Fun Scale Open against alot of really good pilots, I was able to finish 8th with my F-86 Sabre and took first place in Sportsmans Scale Sport class with my Ziroli 92" P-47. I really had a good time and met a lot of great people, modelers and competitors. I atcually think I was more nervous on Friday during static, than flying. Oh and by the way, I was the very first plane in the air Saturday, talk about being in the spotlight.

Anthony, thank you for posting the pictures.. And congrats on your first time at the Nats. I too wanted to compete at the Nats this year but due to family issues etc my plane wasn't finished. Perhaps next year for me.. Glad you had a good time.

Anthony, congradulations on your success! Just out of curiousity, what sort of costs are involved in attending (and competing) in a non-regional scale meet? I'd imagine that one could quite easily part with the better part of $1000 bucks including travel (by car), hotel (budget class), food, fees, etc.
I can't even imagine how much these guys who travel from Brazil and Singapore must be spending! Yet another reason I don't suppose I'll ever be competing. [:o] |

Costs to attend include, entry $65 for the first class and $20 or 25 each additional class, hotel at $55 per night + tax, gas for the travel at $2.35 per gallon (average), meals etc, maybe around $600-$800. Wow, I did not need to add that up. Hey, its a hobby right.... Ever gone deep sea fishing? Thanks Anthony |

Congrats Anthony! Even better for your first Nats. I caught your second P-47 flight Saturday. It's obvious you and machine were well prepared.
FYI- You beat out a good flier (and good friend) Art Shelton and his big Eindecker (last years winner in Sportsman). That's the way it goes! |

I am so happy for you both. We love Scale and it has been a great part of our life. I think we talked on Sunday about the door prize you won. By the way, how did that go? Hey AnthonyW - Great job at Nats and congrats. I also like all of your pics. I to agree on the Culver Cadet. I would love to get the plans to build one of these.
My dad bought one in the late 50's after the owner failed to get the gear pins locked in on one side (had to lower and rock the plane), they landed and ground looped it. My dad re-built the plane from the ground up in Riverton Wyoming, scratch building the sing spars, parts of the fuselage, etc. Here he is standing with it in about 1961 or 62. I have another couple of pictures of it with me sitting up on the wing about a year later maybe, but I have to find these pics out of the recent moving boxes. About the only mod he made to it was putting an overhead plexi window in the canopy, didn't like not being able to see out the top. The engine had so much torque that during take off you all most dropped the wheels off the runway on one side, and by the time you rotated you'd been drug across the runway to the other side. Landed about the same way. Does anyone have more info on this plane at Nats, or know where plans might be found. Like I said, I'd love to build one and surprise my dad with it :D:):D |
