Peter Barth Waco
I'm starting a Peter Barth Waco YMF-5 soon. Any hints by other builders of this plane? Mitch

RE: Peter Barth Waco
Hi Mitch,
just ask me if you need some support. Building of the Waco is easy. Regards Peter |
RE: Peter Barth Waco
Hi Mitch, Peter, others,
Starting this winter building the 1/4 scale WACO from Peter Barth. I like to know the progress of your project and if you have tips yourself by now. What motor are you planning to use? For the 1/4 scale I like know if the 3W 85i B2 will fit properly (without sawing holes in the nice round cowl. I know the 3W 85i B2 is a bit overdone but it will fit other planes I'm planning to build. Grtz, Gerry |
RE: Peter Barth Waco
Gerry, I haven't started the 1/3d Waco yet but I have the RCV 5 cylinder radial for it. It will fit completely inside the cowling. I've already flown this engine on a 1/3d Stearman and it not only sounds fantastic, it has more than enough pull. Mitch

RE: Peter Barth Waco
Gerry,
I just started my 1/4 scale Waco from Barth this week. The lower half of the fuselage is all framed up and I'm just waiting for some glue to dry, then the stab and elevators will be framed up. I added some balsa to all three pieces to get more support for the Robart hinges. I wanted the stab completed before framing up the top of the fuselage, it looks like it would be easier to put the formers and longerons in after the stab is mounted, thus avoiding cutting the longerons. I mounted the tail wheel also before glueing the longerons in place. How far along is your plane? How about posting some pictures. Any problems I should be aware of? Chuck |
RE: Peter Barth Waco
OK somebody please help me out here. I really like Wacos. What is a Peter Barth Waco and is it 1/4 or 1/3? Where is the web site?
Thanks |
RE: Peter Barth Waco
Take a look at the Proctor web site. They sell the Peter Barth 1/3 scale and 1/4 scale Waco here in the US.

Thanks for the info.

RE: Peter Barth Waco
I just started the build on my 1/3d....the upper wings. The plans are very vague about the position of the strut mountings as well as how to set up flying wire anchors. I intend to use streamlined wire too....not the cable as supplied. Any hints? Mitch

RE: Peter Barth Waco
Do you have any good photos of the full scale plane? Look there for the flying wire anchors. I don't know what's in the kit but you can make your own if you need to.

Check this site out, http://bredavik.se/flyingwire/
I', also building the same plane. I'm at the covering stage. If you have any questions just let me know. I have some building photos that may help you. Steve |
RE: Peter Barth Waco
SOCALSAL, I've bought these wires before for my 1/3d Stearman. The problem I'm having is setting up mounts to use for the Waco. The mounts have to be installed during the build as you know. If you could post pix here it would be great. If you're unable to post them, PM me for my e-mail address and I'll arrange to buy prints from you. Mitch

RE: Peter Barth Waco
Mitch, I agree the plans are somewhat vauge. If you look at the plans you will see wher the steel "N" strut mountaing brakets are glued and screwed on the pine sub-spars. Then if you look at some of the other views on the plans you will see that the rigging cables also mount to this bracket up inside the covering area. What I did is just drill a coupe of holes in the steel brackets down towards thw inboard side of the brakets. This way I can remove the flying wires as I need to remove the wings for transport. Let me tell you, this plane gets big quick.
Now if you use thos streamlined wires I sent you that link on you will need to mount thos quick disconnect plates right beside the steel "N" strut brakets ( Make sure they are situated right} Another thing you want to watch for. When mounting those steel "N" brackets make sure they hang down enough so that after you cover the wings you will have enough room to slide the 2.5mm bolt through the braket holes. I have one braket that is just barley down enough to get the bolt through the "N" strut and the bracket. If you don't understad what I mean I will send you a couple of photos. Just drop me a e-mail. Steve,
I'm trying to install the rudder and tail wheel pull/pull system on my quarter scale Barth Waco. Did you use separate servos for the rudder and tail wheel on your third scale, or did you run them to one servo? The problem I'm having is that the pull/pull wires for rudder and wheel will be real close to each other, which if they touched do to vibration, could cause radio interference. If they both ran to the same servo, they could be tied together at toward the rear of the fuselage. I would prefer two servos for each of setup, but one servo look like an easier installation. I'm useing a single servo for the rudder/tailwheel. It is Hitec HS805bb at about 19 kg of torque. It is a pull pull system. See the photo I will try to post. The other servos are for the elevators, one each side.

RE: Peter Barth Waco
There is another thing you my not know. You can get plastic coated cable from many sourses. This type of cable won't cause any radio glitches. My pull/pull system has both rudder and tailwheel on one servo and the cables don't touch, close but not touching. Make sure you install a spring on the end of each cable that connects to the tail wheel, it does not matter which end you attach it to just as long as you have them. It will help prevent any "ground shock" from getting to your servo if your tailwheel hits a rock or some other typy of F.O.D. on the field as you taxi or land.

RE: Peter Barth Waco
Steve,
Thanks for the picture, it gave me some good ideas, plus I will use a single servo. Now that you have a digital camera again, how about posting some pictures of the rest of the plane? Chuck |
RE: Peter Barth Waco
I will try. I have to go to Virtual P.C. on my Mac as it is the only way to post pics. I'll try now to download somemore.
