Tiger Moth pull-pull question.
 

I am going to install a "close to scale" rudder and elevator pull-pull on my GP Tiger Moth. I have some scale drawings for reference as to the location of the control horns, guides, cables, etc., but I cannot find any information on the rudder bar.

Is the bar like a long tiller that spans the width of the fuselage, or are there bell cranks on either side? Any info is appreciated.

Hi Dave,

The full scale Tiger Moth has a simple one piece rudder bar, pinned in the middle, that is longer than the fuselage is wide and actually protrudes through a slot in the covering on each side of the fuselage. The rudder control cables attach to the bar outside the fuselage.

My 1/4 scale Clark Tiger Moth appears to have the same mechanism until you look inside the cockpit. There is a separate short bar for each side. It is pinned in the middle with a screw and is free to rotate. The outboard end connects to the rudder cables, the inboard end (inside the cockpit ) to the rudder servo pushrod. The rudder servo sits in the center of the fuselage about 3 inches behind the two short rudder bars.

The rudder cables are attached to a tiller bar that goes out slots in the fuse just above where the lower wing attaches. The elevators were also run off of a shorter vertical tiller bar behind the rear seat. The elevator control cables criss-cross top to bottom before exiting the fuse.

Here's a tail shot showing how I have the cables running. The upper elev cables run through an eyelet on the leading edge of the stab. The full-size has a short bar that runs through the eyelet with the cables attached to each end of it.

I used braided nylon fishing line for the rudder cables because I didn't want to have parallel metal wires (possible RF noise). They have held up just fine on a 1/4 scale plane. I used the cable that Balsa USA sells for the elevators. If yours is a smaller plane the fishing line should be OK for everything.

After posting, I found on the internet some detail drawings of the inside controls, including the tiller bar, and the elevator bar.

Tonight I de-covered the fuselage and tail feathers and started work. I made a rudder tiller from 1/8" aircraft aluminum with a nylon bushing. I have the appx. locations for everything based on measurements from a 1:40 scale drawing. I will be using the DuBro 4-40 size pull-pull kits. I bought 3 of them. They have coated cable, so I should be alright with the double rudder wires.(?)

I picked up an English publication a few months ago that has a lot of detail shots of the different parts of the Tiger. There are times I wish I hadn't, because it made me realize just how crude the GP Moth is. :( But, I'm working on it!

I know what you mean. When you start studying some closeup pictures of the Tigermoth you realize that there is an incredible amount of detail there.
