Scale tires

Dear folks,

I just wonder who makes 1/4, and 1/3rd scale tires, I mean, the rubber part. The ones available on the market are very toy looking. wrong threading...If you look at most of them, (Dubro, Sullivan and others), they are also very thin. For a serious scale builder it is quite difficult to match the real one.

I am particularly looking for 1/3rd civilian type tires, I can make the wheels I want on the lathe..

Thanks

You're right that this is a major scale challenge and I somehow doubt there is really a commercially available solution in most cases. For a modeler working to an exacting level of scale I think the only solution is probably to try to mold their own tires.

In terms of having the right tread patterns, again you are totally on your own. I've heard of people freezing a rubber tire and then mounting in on a lathe or drill press and carving in the treads. Sounds like something where you'd go through quite a few tires before you got it right.

If you are looking for "Cub" style wheels, Dubro has them in sevral sizes that may work ok on other types of civilian aircraft:

Looks like those Cub tires might be a pretty good starting point. If you can make your own scale hubs you might be able to cut down the tires to fit.

To get the right look on my Nieuport 17 (Legionaire) I had to do a lot of modification of the stock WB wheels.

Does anyone have a documented process for making your own scale hubs?
