Unballanced, I posted this question on another warbird forum (full size aircraft). Here is a link to the thread, pay particular attention to the 7th post.

Thanks everyone, but I still only have published "quotes" as to the color (or not). I'd really prefer a color "period" photo. Looks like they don't exist.[:@]

Another suggestion - The Blue Angels Alumni Association lists three members from 1949. Contact the webmaster and see if he will put you in touch with them, or at least pass along the question. If you get an answer, please report back.

I contacted Len Mozey of BlueAngels.org. Here is his response:

No just Bare and Polished Aluminum and LTJG Robbie Robinson is the only name I have for anyone who flew Bearcat #4.

Thanks Len,

So the Blues Bearcats leading edges were all three colors at some time?

Thanks,

Jeff

They flew the F8F-1C/D Bearcats. The gold leaf was only on the Hellcats. Bearcat #4 (BuNo 94986) was piloted by LTJG Robbie Robinson, September 1946. On September 29, 1946 he was killed during an air show. The "Blue Angles" script was not added until 1949. You are right about the Yellow, Bare and Polished Aluminum.
Here is a link to a Bearcats done in Blue colors http://www.blueangels.org/Aircraft/Stick/F8/Bearcat.htm

Please send me some photo of the Bearcat when you get it done.

Hello,
I am building a 1/7 R/C scale model of a F8F-2 bearcat in Blue Angles theme. - yes I know the blues flew F8F-1's. But I think the difference in fin height wont be noticeable. Or did they fly -2's in '49?

Anyway, I have been scouring the 'Net for photos of the Blues Bearcats. I found the scheme I'd like to model - see photo attached, but the one thing that nobody has been able to positively identify is the color of the leading edges. The guesses have been Yellow, Bare and Polished Aluminum.

Also, can you verify that the "Blue Angles" script on the cowl was done in gold leaf? Also who flew #4 during 1949?

Warmest regards,
Jeff Walker

Check these out. The US Navy markings were in Blue. Also, they were not on the top of the wings, only the bottom and on the fuse.

Hey guys, I was a member of the BLUE Angels maintence team 1952 -1954 Butch Voris was boss in 1952, He was a great man, and I seen him at some of the reunions. I have kept in touch with him through his son -in -law. I had a DVD of his memorial, but past it on to other Alumnia members. In 1952 we had the third Yellow Bearcat and the colors were AN yellow with Blue Angel Blue Letters. I was the painter and we had to mix the Blue color. The color was three parts Insiginia Blue and on part Insigina white the Yellow was AN Yellow> The leading edge was polished metal . Butch told us that the Hellcats were Gloss sea blue and the lettering was Gold leaf
Two good books are BLUE ANGELS 50 years of Precision flight and FIRST BLUE . Lots of info from Butch.
