cub: clipped or no
 

Hey, I'm thinking about purchasing a 1/5 scale cub in the next couple of months, and I'm trying to decide to get the full or clipped wing model. I know that the clipped is more aerodynamic. My question is regarding landing. Is the full winged model really floaty (as in, say LT-40 floaty)? How much less floaty is the clipped wing version?

My main concern is that at our field, we have to come in at a fairly steep angle to clear some trees, and I know that my LT-40 was sometimes hard to get down, expecially with no wind.

Also, how does the size of the cub effect landing? Does larger size = larger wing = longer distance OR does larger size = larger weight = easier to get back down to Earth?

They all fly about the same, I think; I like the bigger ones better. Are you gonna ARF it or kit it? If you do the kit, Sig's 1/5 scale is set up to build either as the full wing or clipped wing version. If you want better performance, go with the clipped wing. It still takes off quickly, glides well, but roll performance is light-years ahead of the full span.

I don't know. Is the Sig 1/5 kit fairly easy to build? I built a Sig LT-40 kit. How much more difficult is cub kit?

The bigger cubs fly tons better that the the little guys. They are much easier to take off, fly and land. If you are worried about the plane floating by in ground effect, go for the clipped wing version...it will settle in a lot quicker, and is a little more agile once you are in the air, if you like to kick your heels up once in while... The full span cubs are great flers in their own right, expecially putting around on a quiet evening or doing touch and goes...

Yah, I've got the heli for the adrenaline rushes, I'm wanting the cub to kick back, fly scale, and look pretty. Just have to decide what size. I was looking at the 1/5 WM's, but that 1/4 is looking good as well!

The Sig is all laser cut, and is a more advanced build than the LT, but it is a straightforward build, the plans and instructions are first rate. Helluva good flying plane; mine is full span, but like Nony says, the clipped wing will let you kick up your heels a bit more. Best power is with a .65 or better 4-stroke, a .72 or .82 would be great for clipped wings. I don't even consider a 2-stroke in a Cub, it's sacriligious.

GO WITH THE CLIPPED WING AND AN 80 - 90 4 STROKE.

YOU CAN SIT BACK AND PUTT AROUND OR FLY THE WINGS OFF.

if I go with the 1/4 scale, do I have to use heavy duty servos?

Standards will work, but you might want high-torque servos, such as Futaba 3010's.
