RE: Daton
Love that Belgian Nieuport! Was that 1/1 scale or a 7/8th replica?
|
RE: Daton
I don't think any of the Nieuports were full sized..
|
RE: Daton
I have a question why are the kit for the nieuports and other plane not full scale but 3/4 or 7/8? maybe a silly question but I just don't know. :)
Thanks Mark |
RE: Daton
I'm guessing they're smaller for cost savings and/or ease of transport and storage. Most, if not all of these planes are dismantled and hauled to and from the flying events.

RE: Daton
Great pictures! Maybe the smaller scale qualifies as experimental light sport aircraft (E-LSA) catagory? (E-LSA includes kit builts under 1,320 lbs, stall below 45 kts, max speed (Vh) 120kts, one or two seaters, etc.). Not an expert but I think the catagory has advantages for manufacturers and lower cost for pilot training. Just a guess. Beautiful planes.

RE: Daton
Engines cost a lot. Lycoming IO 360 is around $24000 factory rebuilt, Continental IO 550 is about $30,000 and these are not radials much less rotories and you still cant swing as big a prop as they realy need. Used of course are much cheaper but still at least half. The smaller engines like 0-200, Rotax, and the VW based engines can be flying for $4000 or less. Also the smaller planes use modern construction but look the part, kind of like the BUSA planes.
