I have built several but this is the oldest kit and one of my favorite planes. My uncle built this kit back in the 70 but I didn't get a chance to see any of that build. I just don't want to screw up the wing.

scale only 4 me 02-08-2020 05:52 AM

Follow the instructions,, as the wing tapers and airfoil shrinks, the distance between the table and the rib trailing edge is also going to be reduced, Making sure each rib is on the same level plane like the instructions call out will create a straight wing,,, that's why newer kit designs have alignment tabs on ribs

good luck

Royal Pitts questions

Well, while continue working on my Skymaster I find myself the new owner of a fully ready to fly but unflown Royal Pitts.
Any tips on a docile CG? Any first flight warnings to be aware of? I’m a veteran flyer but know certain planes can be a handfull.

Here are the pitts s1 plans with balance info.
balance is at leading edge of lower wing.
I'd love to see a picture of your model. I have a built and un flown s2.

Anyone got a new project you're working on?

Mtthwacrss 09-15-2020 08:45 AM

Still working on the Tony.

I'm working on a 1938 Rearwin Speedster 6000C based on plans by Bridi. I've made a few adjustments to try and get it more scale-like, and using a fiberglass fuselage, balsa covered foam wings and tail feathers. The way the wings attach on the full-size plane is puzzling me. I have a great picture that shows the cabin side without the wing and it looks like it sits on a wing tube which is what I'm planning.

Ok, my Skymaster is finally complete. Looking for flight comments from others. Any bad habits to look out for? First flights are always a test of nerves.

What engines are you using?

Given enough time you could have your own squadron!

l have an is 55ax in front and an equivalent electric in the rear. I believe it will likely be able to fly with just the os running. The batteries for the rear are on CG, so there is a weight penalty but I think it is ok. I don’t have a weight to offer yet. Need to put it on the scale.

There are always trade offs. The Skymaster all up, balanced and ready to fly weighs in at 11.35 lbs. Yes it is heavier than the plans call for, it required some weight in the nose to compensate for the 3 thin wing servos mounted in the horizontal stab. Given the much simpler linkages and just making servo connections when separating the tail booms it seemed worth it. Also the battery for the rear motor makes up for about 1 lb of the weight. I bet there have been heavier Skymasters fly.

It looks great!

I started a royal group on Facebook there is a guy out of Australia that flew his with 2 61s, was a bit squarely.
I remember he had to adjust the thrust on the rear engine a bit but I'll inquire with him.

from a guy i know and his first hand experience.
Hey man it calls for 0 degree thrust offsets. Flying.... keep fast. She will tip stall as soon as she can. Ass flaps also if you can. On take off make sure you have plenty of speed before you rotate. That’s what killed mine. It’s self rotated early before we had enough speed. My mate who was flying it, was traumatised and still talks about it.

i_soar 04-13-2021 01:05 AM

Good to know, do you recall where the CG was located? I have mine a bit forward without fuel. Getting close to flight, just a couple more tinker type things to do then do engine run up.

I-fly-any-and-all 04-13-2021 05:04 AM

Cg is on plans as always 1/3 width of wing from leafing edge back

i_soar 04-13-2021 05:07 AM

Thanks, CG is set to 3-1/4 behind LE. This is the forward position. Should be good

Boy, that's pretty cool in it's own right. That brings back memories of the old RCM ads with pics of the big old P-47 and Mustang with the .90 two stroke sized props. The first 'big' plane I built was a Bud Nosen 'Champ'. Pictures please...
