scale hinges
1 Attachment(s)
Anybody know of a source for true scale control surface hinges? Before I drag out the brass and solder, just wondering if someone, somewhere has already done the work for me:) Looking for 1/4 scale rudder and elevator hinges for Cessna. Already have flap and aileron covered.

Somebody got to answer this.....I hope....................

RE: scale hinges
It looks similar to some of the brackets that Proctor sells. But the real issue is finding something at the very exact size you need on your model -- so I strongly suspect you'll have to get out the brass and solder. ;)

MECOA has the CB line of hinges. Maybe some of those could be adapted: http://www.mecoa.com/cb/horns.htm

RE: scale hinges
Most likely, you will need to custom build them. You can use some combination of aluminum sheet, brass/aluminum tubing, G10, and piano wire. I'm currently working on hinges for the flaps on a 1/7 P-51.

RE: scale hinges
Thanks for all the ideas, guys. I thought about the Mecoa hinges, and looked at some of the Proctor hardware (the measurements are real close to what I need), and got some ideas of what might work. I'm gonna mess around and cobble a prototype together and see how it works. My idea involves making the hinges so I can insert a piece of 4-40 rod from the end of the control surface through the hinges, and then secure the wire. I've seen it somewhere before, but don't remember where.
The other thing I need to consider is, each elevator half on the full scale only has two hinges, and the rudder only has two. I have stiffened the hinge spars with 1/8 hardwood the width of the spar (also gives something for screws to bite in), so I feel that two hinges is enough. What do you all think? |
RE: scale hinges
Check out my Ray Torres T-34 build for some scale type hinges & controls, I used on it. The hinging and acuation starts at about post #21.

RE: scale hinges
I made the hinges on the tail surface of my Beaver and PC-6 with plywood and brass tube. You can see it a little bit on this pics : https://mraerodesign.securicom.ca/fr...pg&ProduitID=2
They are removable and very strong. You can download the Beaver manual the see how they work exactly and how I install it on the model.. https://mraerodesign.securicom.ca/co...v3%2Djpg%2Epdf I use 1/8" thick plywood (5 ply aircraft grade) on each side with 1/8" balsa on center to get a thicker hinges assembly. |
