Heritage R/C Hellcat
 

I am about to build a Heritage R/C Hellcat, and use the recommended Robart rotating retracts. Has anyone here had any experience with this kit? building qualities? flying characteristics? engine used? I am thinking either a 61 2 stroke or an .80 four stroke (both of which I have laying around). Let me hear your comments.

I have built the Wing Mfg. Hellcat, and it is my best flying plane to date. My buddy built the Stuka from Heritage and it is a good plane. I would go for the Saito 4 stroke . it swings a bigger prop and is a radial cowl. I have used the Robart rotating retracts and they are good. I would reccomend the strut covers also because they do add strength and better looks. Also run the Saito horizontal and not inverted. It is a very good kit that builds fast and is well engineered. I have been through the plans and the instructions and I agree it looks like a well engineered kit. Certainly light, and the laser cutting looks really good. I evidently have the older kit with the plastic cowl, and I hear that they all come with fiberglass cowls now. I might see if I could get them send me the fiberglass one. I would like to do this in the three color scheme after applying a layer of glass. Hopefully I can keep the weight light.

Is the Heritage Hellcat and the Wing Mfg Hellcat one and the same? I've located the Wing Mfg website, but I can't find any info on Heritage? Please let me know if you know of Heritage's website. Thanks.

Go to www.yahoo.com and do a search for Heritage R/C Models. I cannot remember the website, but it is something like www.wyomodels.com. Best to try an do the Yahoo search. Sorry I cannot be of more help. But in answer to your question, they are not the same kit.

I have built the Heritage RC Stuka, and it was a wonderful kit. I've been contemplating their Hellcat for some time. Only one problem: as they state in their ad, the wing is 'literally designed around the Robart rotating retracts'. I have seen some of my flying pals nearly suicidal over these things. One guy had them on a TopFlite F4U and finally converted them to fixed mode with epoxy, and still had trouble with them. I don't mean to slam Robart...they are a great company with an outstanding product offering...but I don't want to spend the time required to build a warbird and then have to fly it with fixed gear. Has anybody had experience with "60-size" rotating retracts, either good or bad? Any recommendations?

I also have a set of Century Jet retracts made for the TF Corsair. I plan on seeing if they will fit in this bird, which should not be a problem since they are of a slightly lower profile than the Robart, or so I have been told. Will let you know when I get around to putting it together.

The Hellcat Is a great flying airplane in any scale. Easy with lots of wing not like a P-40 which snaps easily. There was an article in RC report on the Heritage Tempest a few months back and it was touted as a really nice building kit. as far as the Robart retracts are concerned I have them in a 10 # TF Gold P-40 and they work fine. I like the century Jets Much better as they are much stronger. I have a set of those for My tf Corsair. The Corsair struts are too short for the Hellcat unfortunately. Century Jet makes a pair for the Wing Mfg Hellcat which should fit nicely in the Heritage Hellcat www.centuryjet.com

Thanks for the info Mark. I checked out your deHavilland Models site. I've got a 85" span Norseman (Unionville) and might be interested in a pair of your gear pants if price is right. In process of recovering it.
ARFs don't interest me, I'm a builder more than a flyer, but I like your choice of aircraft. I'll probably add a Beaver to my kits-in-waiting.
